1 Answer

The Maxtor 3200 external HD is not recognized by my computer. In Device Manager it says not drive available for it. I have been unable to find a driver to download and wondered if you recommended a site that has it available?

Have you tried looking in 'MY COMPUTER' and look at the mass storage devices ie. C drive, D drive, F drive, H drive.......
Explore/Expand these drives to see what is on them. If you know what is already on this drive then you should see the data you are after and you will have discovered the drive.

With the drive connected and if you are running USB2 You should see this drive disapear from the list as you disconnect it.

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

Is there an enable option when you right click the icon? If you're using Windows, go to Device manager and check if you can enable it from there.

Maxtor 200 gb external will not show up in my computer after numerous installs

For Vista you don't need any driver for this, it should recognize and install automatically.
Did you check the device manager to see if the disk is recognized in the device list?

Next step is to check the Disk Manager (right-click My Computer, select Manage and then select disk management), and see if the disk already has a partition and has been formatted. If not, then it will not show up in "My Computer" with a drive letter yet.

Some details on external hard disk troubleshooting might also help.

Computer suddenly does not recognize my external drive

I assume you have look at the Microsoft Knowledgebase article?

You can also check this troubleshooting article.

You might need to force reinstallation of some devices, the external HDD at least, but maybe also the USB controller device in the Device Manager.

Worst case scenario, open the disk and connect the HDD internally (IDE/SATA depending on the interface).

Maxtor 3200 usb hard drive with windows vista home premium

Hey guys I had the same problem... All the drivers for the device are inside the harddrive. Maxtor doesn't have any because you don't need any. What they've neglected to let any of us know is the power supply provided with the unit isn't powerful enough to run it. Replace the original power supply with another one and this will solve the problem. I replaced mine with an old laptops power supply, the fit was alittle tight but believe me it works.

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.
