Question about Tyan Riser Card (M2041) Expansion Module

1 Answer

I am thinking of buying a Tyan motherboard that has an option of installing the Tyan Riser Card 2091. My question how is the expansion card attached to the motherboard. The manual makes no mention of attaching the card only that the expansion card exist.

You dont mention what you wish to use this motherboard for.
Most if not all tyan motherboard are for servers. This is of little use to the average computer user.
Try looking on google "tyan riser card m2041"

How do i reset the password on a Tyan m3296 SMDC

contact Tyan and request support, just say that the hardware was in a machine you were given. It might be that that there is a generic password built int the firmware. Such a practice is common on most electronic equipment, hope you are lucky. Otherwise look for an answer on Tyan forums or Tom's Hardware

How can I install a PCIe video card to the riser on an IBM Thinkcentre A-52 computer?

John,

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?

In the list under the bold red Guides and Manuals subheading,
click on Hardware maintenance manuals.

Click on the blue -> [+] Click for files

Now click on the blue -> Hardware Maintenance Manual
(Above - 41d4550.pdf / 8.53MB )

This is a PDF file. May take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.

At the top of the PDF file is the PDF file page number box. It is to the right of the Down Arrow.
If you know the page you want you can go to it page, by page, using the Down Arrow, or you can do this;

1) Put your mouse cursor in the PDF file page number box.
Left-click once.
(Anything in page number box is now highlighted in Blue)

2) Type the page number.
3) Press the Enter key.

Also at the top is the Zoom In icon, ( + ), and the Zoom Out icon,
( - ).
Clicking on the Zoom In icon increases the view size.
Clicking on the Zoom Out icon decreases the view size.

Go to Page 263.

The Riser Card, or 'Daughter Card', is supposed to have
ONE -> PCI-Express x16 slot.
(Riser card is pointed out by the number 12 )

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-60400

Scroll the page down. Look under the bold subheading - Slots

"Slot 1: full length, x16 (16 Lane) PCI Express (graphics only)"

However it also states,

"Slot 2: half-length, x1 (1 Lane) PCI Express
Slot 3: half-length, PCI
Slot 4: half-length, PCI"

Hmmmm, okay, let's look at the 'Daughter Card',

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Thinkcentre-S51-A52-PCI-PCI-e-x1-Riser-Card-/300562298930

Scroll the page down to the bottom to the photo.

The long white expansion slot on top is a PCI slot,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PCI_Slots_Digon3.JPG

The black 'slot' underneath, is a combo of PCI-Express type expansion slots.

Looking at the contact pins;
A PCI-Express x1 expansion card, would fit in the slot all the way to the right, in the photo.

See the details printed in-between the white PCI slot, and the black slot underneath?

"PCIe x1 - ADD2 - R SLOT"

PCI Express x1 card - Add to the Right Slot

Means to me the entire slot, is used for a PCI-Express x16 graphics card.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PCIExpress.jpg

The top Yellow slot is an example of a PCI-Express x4 slot.
Next slot down is an example of a PCI-Express x16 slot.
Next slot down is a PCI-Express x1 slot.
Next slot down is a PCI-Express x16 slot.
The last example is a PCI slot.

[Note* Color does not matter of the slots ]

From my perspective of looking at the photo for the Riser Card, I see the PCI-Express x16 slot, (Black), as being too wide in the middle.

Do not see that the gold plated contact pins of the PCI-Express graphics card, will make good contact with the contact pins, in that Black slot.

Haven't worked on a 'Pizza-Box' style of desktop computer in YEARS, so I am kinda' out of the loop.

IF, a PCI-Express graphics card does indeed make good contact, I suggest using a Low Profile one.

Just one example,

Post back in a Comment, John.

Hello
I dont think there are any agp to pci ex riser cards. As pci e x16 is part of the motherboard circutry.

There are pci to agp riser cards. If your going to be playing some of the latest games. Most games in the past 3 yrs require a pci x16 vid card.

I suggest geting another motherboard,chipset,and memory.Along with a Pci e x 16 card min 512mb.

Hi, When I switch on my computer, I am not gettging the dsiplay on my monitor. My monitor is working with other desktop. My RAM is working fine. It seems my board inbuilt VGA card is gone. How do I replace...

You can install a video card in the AGP expansion slot to replace the faulty on-board video. When you connect the monitor to the new video card it should boot uo with the generic VGA video driver, then you need to install the video driver (CD) that was supplied with the video card, then you can the screen resolution to 1024X768 or higher to suit your tastes.

Board will not boot

Hi, try the motherboard with only CPU, RAM ,graphic card & Power supply. Unplug all other devices attached to it. Clean the golden pins of your RAM & graphic card. (you may need to try other RAM & graphic card)
Please note that you should use not more than 4GB of RAM & the frequency of the RAM should not exceed 533MHZ (It won't boot).
If the above don't work, you should clear CMOS of your motherboard.
I think that would help you.

I want install my sound card by net c97 now

Hy i'm Kabeer Khan for installing sound card it is first required AMR(Audio Modem Riser) slot on your motherboard. AMR slot is 64 pin very smal slot is like as PCI(Peripheral Compnent Interconnect) If it avialable then open your sound card and try to set your sound card. Remember one thing during installing card it must be considered that the cuts of slots should be matched according to your card alignment. After installing card bind you CPU and install driver that would be given with your sound card packet for this open conrol panel and found add hardware icon and double click on it then install driver from CD option would be selected and click next. When wizard is finished you will be able to use your sound card.
Thanks.

Having problems trying to get a Tyan i5000xt MB to allow the vid card to come up with a display

  1. If the MB has jumpers, you must make sure they match you CPU.
  2. Make sure you have the right memory modules and that they are installed correctly.
  3. Unplug all drive cables from the mother board (HD, CD, DVD, Etc) and then try to boot. If you see video, plug them back in one at a time.
Hope that helps...
