Hi,

This is a common problem on most of the refrigerators.Either it is a faulty compressor or the start device on the compressor. If you have experience in repairing appliances, could take all precautions necessary and use multimeter - You could do a continuity check on compressor motor and all combination's. An infinity value on multimeter would confirm bad compressor.

On the side of the compressor you will see a box (maybe a cover) remove the cover if it has one and then remove the wire harness. next you will see the relay with the capacitor mounted to it. give the relay a tug and pull it off the side of the compressor. once you have it off pull the capacitor off and then give the relay a shake. If it rattles the relay is bad. if the relay does not rattle the compressor is bad and you will need to call a service guy to replace the compressor.

Other option would be - Go to a local repair shop and get an overload and relay ( cost around $50 ).Replace it. If the problem still persists, then it is faulty compressor.

Compressor's usually have 5 years warranty on it.

Good Luck!!

Thanks!!

Hi there,

Well most of the time these sound comes because of overload so first of all you can please follow the below steps -
1. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and unplug it. Refrigerators are very heavy, so get help moving it and do not tip or rock it.
2. Find the condenser coils on the refrigerator. These coils disperse heat, so cleaning them improves the effectiveness of the refrigerator, and stop humming sound.
3. Remove the dust build up on the condenser coils with a vacuum cleaner or condenser brush. If there is a large amount of build up on the refrigerator coils, you can use mild soapy water to more thoroughly clean them.
4. Clean the grill on the front of the refrigerator as it will also help eliminate the humming noise. The grill on front of the refrigerator should snap off and on, but check for screws first. Then pull firmly toward you to remove the grill. If further you have the same problem then there must be some problem in Relay, and you need to replace them. Please post comments for further help or information........

Good Luck!!

Thanks

What relay's. Does this model have a start relay or a run capacitor?

  • Mukesh Kumar Jul 31, 2010

The refrigerator relay's purpose is to start the compressor. A faulty relay can result in the compressor failing to cycle on. The relay is located on the lower rear of the refrigerator. Remove the cover on the compressor relay box. The cover is usually held in place by retaining clips or tension clips. There are usually three components inside this box: the compressor relay, the compressor motor terminals and the overload protector. The compressor relay is the largest component and will either be wirewound or solid state. you need a multimeter to check that Relay.

What am I looking for when I test relay?

Can you tell me if this model has a start relay or just a run capacitor. When I plug in, I get a brief electrical sound as if compressor trying to start, then clicks off.

Admiral HMG61139 21.1 cu ft Side-by side refrigerator, not cooling. clicking sound every few minutes. (sounds similar to oven thermostat or relay coming on).

Hello,

Thier is one of a couple things going on with your refrig.

The start relay on the compressor is bad so what your hearing is the overload thermostat tripping on and off and keeps trying to start the compressor

The fan motor by the compressor called the condenser fan motor is not running to cool the compressor so once and what you overload keep trying to start the compressor but its too hot to start

Finally the compressor is locked up and the overload still keeps trying to start it but its totally seazed and ain't going to run

I hope this helps you to determine what is wrong with your refrigerator,
Gene
