Question about Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7825 Notebook

1 Answer

I put in a new Seagate 250GB hard drive and I did the level 4 using spinrite. I didn't format it first. I noticed in S.M.A.R.T as it scanned, one of the bars had a bit of red. It listed seek errors but I know, as the video said, some drives are designed like that. The graphic display showed everything is good. It took like 8 hours 30 minutes or so to do the complete level 4. That means the drive is fine to use, right?

Hi.

Spinrite may report seek errors for different reasons. If you format the hard drive, and before formatting you delete and re-define the partition in the right way (eg using fdisk/ntfs), then you will get no errors.

Level 4 (or level 5) seek error on an unformatted new drives are often due to the way the manufacturer configures partition using an imaging software. As said this errors do not necessarily mean that the disk is bad. There are more reasons causing seek errors. The important thing is that you do not get any R/W errors.
Low level utilities like Spinrite will always detect a number of seek errors on a new hard drive.

The only errors I recalled seeing were seek errors. There were no ecc and I dont think there were R/W errors. I am going to install Windows on it using the recovery software cd from the manufacture

Formatting writes data to the disk, should a sector of the disk be damaged the hard drive may not report it to he PS3 firmware. If you can install the hard drive in a computer hard drive repair utilities, like spinrite, can often fix such problems. http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm
Connecting it to a computer and doing a low level format there is likely to have better error correction than the built in PS3 formatting.

Try running Scan Disk and defrag. Otherwise use a program like SpinRite to do a low level scan of the disk.

Which Portable hard drive can be used with both a Windows PC and an Apple iMac please

Hello

Well, you can basically buy any external drive and it will work on both operating systems if you format it to a FAT32 format.

If you buy a new drive, you first need to delete the partition on the new drive using Fat32 formatter, and then format it in Fat32 file system.
Here is a link to where you can download the software for free, and get instructions on how to do this.

Hope this can help.

It sounds like your hard drive is messed up. Don't worry you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

Yes there are. The first thing I'd say to you is you may want to involve a professional if the disc contains critical information because they would have experiance and tools you don't. If it's not that critical and you want to give it a shot you can run a file system check on the volume or run a program like spinrite www.spinrite.com

Data recovery

The best data recovery software that I know of is called Spinrite 6. ($89.00) Go to www.grc.com. (Gibson Research Corporation). No, I'm not associated with GRC, and I don't make any money recommending Spinrite. However I've used it on many drives with great success. Be sure to check out Spinrite's FAQ's.

While there you might also want to check out his "Security Now" podcasts. Steve Gibson is one of the foremost experts on internet and network security.

In August 2007, Security Now! won in the People's Choice Podcast Awards Technology/Science category. In August 2006, Security Now! ranked fourth in the "Top 40" of all podcasts listened to via the PodNova service. [4] Security Now! averaged around 100,000 downloads per episode throughout 2006.

Can't format or create partition......

It maybe that your motherboard bios cannot support 250GB and needs an update, but caution applies here. The other problem maybe that you need to use the hardrive on the 'CS' (Cable select setting). Lastly if you already have a pc running, use this drive as the slave the go to the Maxtor website to make use of the diagnostic/formatting and partition tools.
