Virus cannot cause hard drive to click. Most likely it has bad heads. This site should help you better diagnose the problem.

It might be because of virus, that stop you to enter your hard disk when you click on it..install anti virus like avg 7.5,mcafee ,norton to check for the virus .

also goto start >open Run>cmd to open command prompt and type
chkdsk
to check your driver for errors.

External hard drive clicks and wont read on laptop

Uhoh! Sounds like you have the infamous 'Click Of Death'. Unfortunately this means that your hard drive has died and you may not be able to get the Hard Drive to read at all. (Its happened to me and lets just say I wasn't very happy!)

Hard drive doesnt show up when plugged in

Hi

Thank you for your query

If the hard drive is making a knocking/clicking sound, then unfortunaltey its on its way out.

The read arm that reads the metal discs inside the drive is heating against the discs, thus causing the knocking sound

I would recommned that you replace the drive ASAP

I hope this helps

The computer reads the hard drive but i dont see a disk drive on' my computer' i.e i cant access the hard drive.

Do the following to see if the hard drive is recognized.

Left Click on control panel
Left Click on administrative tools
Left Click on Computer Management
scroll down the screen until you find disk management
left click on disk management.

see if you device is listed in the disk management window.

If so then, right click on the disk you indicated and select properties.

make sure the disk is active and that windows is reading the basic information.

IF your computer does not recognize the hard disk, you may want to disconnect it and reboot your computer.

then reconnect it, and restart once again.

this allows your bios and operating system the chance to "discover" your hardware again.

Drive will not start just clicks.

A clicking hard drive is a faulty hard drive. The clicking sound is the read/write heads flicking back and forth across the disk platters.
You can remove the hard drive and insert a new hard drive in the Western Digital case.
If yo need data off this hard drive then there are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Simpletech hard drive not being read. It worked awhile ago, but recently i've tried to plug it in and autoplay doesnt come up anymore, so when i got to the computer screen to read the hard drive it reads...

Windows likes to mess with drive letters. Try this:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
  7. Click OK.
I'm pretty sure this will fix the problem. If not try us again at Fixya.com
