Ntractive CRM Tethers the Mac Desktop to the Cloud

One advantage of using a customer relationship management app as cloud-based software is that users can get to it regardless of what platform they're using -- just open your browser and sign in. However, using an app through a browser has limitations of its own, so Ntractive set about to build a CRM app for Mac that runs on the desktop but still shares info using the cloud.

From Laid-Off to Entrepreneur: Launching a Web Biz on a Shoestring. "That day" has arrived. For whatever reason, the job you’ve been working for years is no longer there for you. Times are tough; people are facing unemployment in droves. In today's economic age, however unfair, it's a reality. What do you do now? [Download PDF: 10 pgs | 558k]

In the architecture of heavy-duty business programs, customer relationship management (CRM) software is a load-bearing beam. It's a mission critical application that can be a key to success Download Free eBook - The Edge of Success: 9 Building Blocks to Double Your Sales. It's also the sort of app that operates very comfortably in "the cloud" -- that metaphor for the Internet and platform-agnostic computing.

Justin Bartak realized the cloud's potential for managing customers relatively early. Bartak is CTO and cofounder of Ntractive, a Grand Folks, N.D., Macintosh-centric CRM software maker.

Bartak explained that he began noodling with the idea behind Ntractive's primary product, Elements CRM, in 2003 while working for a Macintosh developer on Web applications.

"I was looking a lot at NetSuite and Salesforce at that time, even though they were in their infancy," he told MacNewsWorld. "I thought it would be really cool if I could do this for the Mac."

NetSuite and Salesforce are Web-based applications, including CRM, aimed at businesses.
Browsers Shunned

After working on the cloud piece of the program for two years, Bartak enlisted his friend and fellow North Dakota native, Dale Jensen, to help him give his application some desktop flair.

"The idea was to make a Web app that looked like and felt like a desktop app," Bartak explained. "That's how we married the desktop and the Web together."

Elements CRM departs from typical cloud apps because it doesn't run in a Web browser. Rather than embrace the agnosticism of those apps, it has steadfastly entrenched itself in the Mac camp.

Eschewing browser operation gives Elements CRM certain advantages, according to Bartak.

"We're able to blend a lot of the desktop pieces that no one can do into the Web," he maintained.
Better Security, Better Interface

"For example," he continued, "we're able to do drag-and-drop technology. You can grab an Excel file or iPhoto file from your desktop, drag it onto Elements, and it will auto upload. No upload buttons. None of the typical Web stuff you'd have to do."

"We're able to jump back and forth from the desktop and the Web and blur the lines," he added. "A lot of people can't tell where one ends and one begins because we're doing both at the same time."

Moreover, it makes execution of the code in the program simpler and more secure.

By not having to write code to accommodate every browser on the market, Bartak explained "we can write one unified piece of code that can be used constantly."

Without URL bars and add-ons found in browsers, he continued, Elements can avoid security problems commonly plaguing them, such as SQL injections.

What's more, the non-browser approach gives Bartak and company more control over Elements' interface.

"It's easy to use," he observed. "Every screen looks the same as you click through. It's simple. It's clean. You always know what to expect."
Hedging Bets

Although currently locked in a Mac silo, Ntractive has left its options open. That's because the application is based on WebKit, an open source, cross-platform browser engine.

"Since we are using WebKit at the back end, we will be able to move to any platform, be it Windows or whatever else we'd like to fairly easily," Bartak contended.

When he began building Elements in 2003, selling IT departments on using Macs for core business applications could be a tough sell, Bartak acknowledged.

"I was a Mac guy, and I wasn't really thinking about market conditions," he confessed. "I built something that I loved. I loved the Mac and I wanted to build something for the Mac. If it were a business decision, it would have been the wrong one in 2003."

However, "today it's a great decision," he continued. "We have many, many companies saying, 'Forget it. We won't wait for your Windows version. We'll just buy new Macs."
Golden Cloud

What began as a labor of love appears to be a savvy business move as more and more firms turn to the cloud for their IT solutions.

"Cloud computing is a full replacement for premise-based computing," Denis Pombriant, managing principal with Beagle Research, told MacNewsWorld.

"What's happening is that many vendors are building to standards that enable applications to work together in the cloud," he continued, "so that it's now possible to build entire end-to-end business process support from multiple vendors there."

"The cloud offers so many things," he added. "A premise-based system might offer several things, but it doesn't offer all the capabilities that go into making cloud computing so cost effective and so powerful."

Unwanted pop ups on my mac

Chances are you downloaded and installed something that not only wasn't needed, but completely unnecessary for a Mac (MacKeeper or something else). These apps ALSO install unwanted and unasked for browser re-direct software.

You need to do two things immediately, followed by one very important step after that.
  1. If you haven't already done so, download a different browser software as backup for future issues (Firefox, Chrome or Opera are accepted as best alternatives).
  2. Click the link below for Adware Medic. Install this software, run the program, and then please donate to the developer if you feel a smooth running Mac is worth it to you. It will ask to restart your computer once it's done.
  3. Download AppZapper or AppCleaner. AppZapper gives you five free zaps and then you need to buy it, or just use AppCleaner to remove ANY AND ALL "Clean Up/Optimizing" software, ANY AND ALL anti-virus software... if you haven't noticed by now, AV software on a Mac is pretty pointless since it didn't snag your browser re-direct software.
That should solve your problems. If not, let us know here!

I have a mac and I can't load my facebook page at all and my youtube is not able to play video although I can still open the page.

Thank you for contacting Fixya Support, I am glad to assist.

Depending on your web browser, you first should clear the Cache of the select web browser and then reset the browser.

I would also recommend you try this simple procedure I am providing you from MacOSX.com forum regarding the inability to launch or load Facebook:
Link: Cannot Load Facebook on my Mac

In regards to video suggest you try, depending on the web browser you have (Safari or Firefox) is to check the Add-ons of that browser, for any updated plug-ins for viewing Youtube videos.

If you are accustomed to using just one browser, experiment with different browsers.

The most commonly used web browsers for Mac OS X are:

* Safari (Built-in web browser from Apple direct)

* Firefox (Developed by Mozilla)

* Camino (Developed by Mozilla)

* Opera (Developed by Opera Software)

For your current web browser, if you want to keep working on the video playback for your Youtube, you should clear the Cache of the web browser and reset your browser.

These are some general practices to resolving the stated issues you are having with launching Facebook and loading YouTube videos.

Let me know if this helps.

As of December 31, 2005, Microsoft no longer provided support for Internet Explorer for Mac.

As a result, Microsoft recommended all users of IE for Mac, use either Safari, or any other 3rd party, Mac compatible browser. Here are 3 of the more popular made for Mac browsers, widely used with Macs as well as Safari 4.0:
  • Firefox for Mac v3.6
  • Camino for Mac v2.0.1
  • Opera for Mac v10.10
All of these browsers are free downloads and are easy to via Google or any other web search engine you like to use.

Because you should have Safari built in, I would recommend you access that web browser, by going into Finder > Applications> Safari and launching that web browser.

This should enable you to continue surfing online, despite the IE setback.

Let me know if this data is helpful to you.

Thanks!

Check the web-browser settings on the Mac -- "disable" any usage of a proxy-server.

Or, try a different web-browser, in case the web-browser on the Mac cannot properly handle the web-pages that the DI-624 is sending.
