You can use your USB memory stick just like a normal hard drive, CD-ROM drive etc.
You can access the USB stick from Windows Explorer or the standard file, save as option in most applications.
No negative affects would occur from not unplugging the device. However make sure you click 'eject' in Windows Explorer if you want to remove the device when the computer is still switched on. If you switch the computer off you can remove the stick with no other considerations.
