SOURCE: Starter rope too hard to pull on Yard Machine By MTD

Not sure if this will help. Don't want to sound like a **** but....Have you made sure nothing is caught or jammed inside it. This could make it hard to start with the cord..

SOURCE: starter rope will not pull. Will pull smoothly

If I understand what you are saying... The starter pulls smoothly with the starter cover removed or when installed and the plug removed (no compression or spark). If this is correct I think your saw's timing has slipped or maybe a defective decomp valve. Time to visit your neighborhood chainsaw seller/mechanic.HTH

SOURCE: I have an 8 hp

I have several older Briggs engines on mower and tillers and was having similar problems. I purchased electronic ignition kit (Nova II) from lawn mower shop and installed with easy wiring instructions (about $12). Used same old coil. Engines ran better, more power and never needs adjustment. Look here for instructions:

One thing to check however, you may have pinched kill wire when removing/installing starter cover. Temporarily remove wire from kill tab on coil and check for spark. Good Luck.

SOURCE: 4hp briggs and stratton roto

There are 3 metal arms that come out when the recoil is pulled. These arms can get dirty or rust and stick in so the recoil won't engage the flywheel or crank. .You will need to pull off the recoil and lubricate and work back and forth the arms.

How to start a 1979 30 hp evinrude

Hey Norman,
There are only three things required for a internal combustion engine to run.
I have one issue.. I DO NOT see a 30HP built in 1970 - 1983?? They are 35HP. The first 30HP I see was built in 1984.
1. A good timed spark (New spark plug) - The correct one. (CHAMPION QL77J4 - qty. 2)-1984 30Hp.
2. A proper fuel air ratio (with yours also the proper oil/gas mixture)
3. Good compression (for your engine - w/carb wide open 120psi)
A service manual will help you ( MarineEngine.com)

Grab a buddy to help you do these..:
1. Make sure your spark plug will fire. Hold the spark plug hex against the head and have your buddy pull the cord..it should fire a juicy blue spark,, BUT - a healthy orange spark will work. If there is no spark..(double/triple check this!!).. stop here until you get a spark!!
2. Have the carb cleaned and set..by a competent professional (one this old can be fixed by a trained professional motorcycle mechanic -its the SAME SIMPLE type carb - I repair "carbed" outboard engines too!).
3. You can hold your finger in the spark plug hole TIGHLY and have your buddy pull the rope.. it should BLOW your finger off the hole.. if you are not sure - get a compression gauge - use the 1/2" depth threads, screw it in until the oring seats..put the throttle wide open - WITH THE SPARK PLUG REMOVED and AWAY FROM YOUR HANDS...pull the starter rope hard about 5-7 times!! It should pump up to about 115lbs.+ minimum!!
If these above items are correct.. you engine should/will run!!

How do u remove recoil spring assembly that is held in place by a roll pin on a 4hp Briggs and stratten

I suspect you asked this question because your recoil starter rope has broken , so first let me say be extreemly carefull the coiled spring on top of rope pully has a lot of tension to it , it can and will hurt you if it gets out of the pocket it sets in, what ive allways done is to NOT remove the pully at all but hold it with a large C clamp i put this on right after i get about 6 good turns to tighen the spring then i apply clamp , use a razor knife to cut ball off end of old rope and pull out using pliers thread new rope from outside rope guide to into the rope pully and knot if off in original hole (use a lighter to part melt rope end) measure off about 5 feet of rope and tie starter handle on there then its simple just slowly let clamp pressure off the pulley will pull rope in to cover automaticly done !!!

Starter rope grabs at times. why?

try using the de-compression button when starting, will do the same as removing the spark plug but without removing the spark plug.

Failing that, remove the starter cover and check starter cord for daage or signs of snagging.

Toro Electric Start Problem

Remove spark plug and observe condition. Fouled with oil, bad motor. With plug removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD40 in spark plug hole, pull rope several times see if oil blows out. Spray a lot of starter fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug. Spray starter fluid in air cleaner area of carb, try to start. Replace spark plug, try to start. Ensure oil is full, all mowers have a low oil sensor now. 30w oil. Always use Stabile in gas.

Pull rope snapped on my Yard Machines 4hp 22in push mower

There should be 3 -3/8 or 7/16" bolts on the side of mower (where the spark plug is, there should be one) the other two will be just opposit of the two. Remove bolts and housing should be free. You might to remove any cables to free up any slack.
