Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

I dropped a steel machine nut into the Badger 5 when it was running and now it is stuck. Motor still hums when turned on. Is there a way to open the unit from the top to remove the nut? I notice it has a hex nut on top....can that be removed to get in?

My Badger 5 is just humming and I smell a bad burning smell.

Either the Shredding Plate or the motor has burned out. In your case, it sounds like the latter. The motor is not repairable, you have to buy a new unit complete.

I think I ground up a plastic bag in disposal....I have cleared out as best I can, turned the blades with a wrench, re set the button, but it won't move, just humming....does the unit need to be...

Don't keep running the disposal when it is humming or motor will burn up.
You might need a plumber, and/or might need to replace disposal.

1) If the disposal cutter disc turns freely, and motor will not start then disposal has gone bad.

2) If disposal cutter disc is still stuck, then you might be able to salvage by removing two nuts on p-trap below sink.
P-trap drops free.
Remove 2 bolts holding tailpiece to side of disposal so you have access to plastic bag from below the cutter disc.
Keep removing plastic bag and keep working the wrench from below. It should eventually give way.
Put wood broomstick down sink opening and wedge broomstick against sink opening to get cutter disc to rotate.
Spray WD40 into opening to help lubricate the struck parts.

3) I wrote ez disposal replacement steps that also cover tips for reassembling p-trap.

Garbage disposle makes a humming noise when turned on. InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

Did you also hear any clattering sounds when it started? If so, it is rotating. If not then this hum is the motor in the lock rotor stage. Did you place garbage in it yet? Always run cool water in it when starting it.

We have a Badger 5 Insinkerator and had a small pebble fall in and the blades are not turning and motor hums, but that is all it is doing. I reached in and felt around for any other debris, and it is...

first of all,,,watch your fingers!!!
i think you may have burnt out the motor,,if its humming its stuck and is trying to turn or its burnt out what ever
""dont put fingers in it they get choped off""
have a real good look inside there may still be some thing jaming it, if you can turn it round with some thing,,,not fingers! you may clear it and it may just start working again,,,

Badger 1 1/3 HP Garbage disposal is stuck. I have hit the reset button took out what was jamming it and it still hums but won't turn. Please help!

Can you turn the motor by hand? (with the wrench in the bottom of the disposal) If not then you either still have a restriction/jam or the motor is seized. If you can spin the motor somewhat freely with the wrench then you most likely have a bad motor and will have to replace it. Hope this helps

Humming dispoosal

I think I just replied to this thread, and suggested what you seem to have already done. Sorry to say, but the disposal is a gonner. That means the motor has been seized (like a car that runs out of oil). No bringing it back, but easy to replace and not too costly.

I have a Badger 5 that will not turn on. The blade freely turns by hand, but unit will only hum like the motor is locked. Suggestions.

Use and allen wrench underneath in the center of the disposal. Does the shaft turn freely? If it does, the capacitor is bad. If the shaft won't turn, there is something stuck inside the disposal.
