Question about Minolta Maxxum 500si 35mm SLR Camera

Open Question

Minolta Maxxum 500si mirror up, blocking

I have a Minolta Maxxum 500si 35mm SLR. The mirror is up, blocking viewfinder. I've tried new batteries, etc. Is this something I can fix or I do I just need to trash the camera. It's an older camera. I'm figuring it will cost more than the camera is worth to send out to be repaired.

SOURCE: Minolta Maxxum 7000 35mm SLR Camera not working

Dear Minolta friends,
I have recently bought a second hand Maxxum 7000 and a AF lens, but found the body not ocntrolling the aperture while shooting. I know 7000 has someting special. Is my problem is due to lens and body compatibility or actually the malfunction of the body. I am sure the AF lens is ok since i have tried it working with another minolta af body.
Can give me an advice?

SOURCE: when I look through the viewfinder, everything is dark....

First remove the battery. wipe off the battery contacts. reinstall the battery. Battery may be weak, replace.
If that fails, remove the lens. See the mirror in there?
If its stuck in the up position, you can return it by hand. But I recommend a toothpick. It won't leave fingerprints.

SOURCE: I need to know if I can covert my Minolta Maxxum

Yes, if you have a complete electronics workshop and machine shop. Since you're going to have to acquire a sensor, processor, and all the other parts, and then figure out how to put them all together, it would be much cheaper and easier to just buy a new digital SLR.

SOURCE: I need a battery for

You need one 2CR5 lithium cell for your camera. They're still available, see here for details. Note that other suppliers stock them as well, I only link to the supplier provided as they're where I buy mine and the page shows you alternative model numbers that the battery is sometimes known by.

Please take a moment to rate my answer.

Looking through the view finder I am confronted with a symetrical discoloration. Mirror is O.K.

I have little experience with this model but it does sound like a CCD problem. Is there any chance moisture could have been ingressed into the camera. Simply taking the camera out of a warm car or house and into a very cold environment for some time and then back into warmth again can cause condensation to form inside. This would certainly upset the CCD.

Everything is dark when i look through the viewfinder

it may be a battery , or stuck shutter.
remove lense and look inside mabe give some things a wiggle. make sure you have a full battery that you know works.
if your not sure and it is a valuable camera , take it to a service guy :-)

Where to get a Repair Service for my Minolta Maxxum 3xi?

Lens fully closed so viewfinder is dark and secondly your auto focus will not work either in this condition ( not enough light reaching the sensor at the bottom of the mirror box ). Problem is the aperture control mechanism called 'the base plate set' situated next to the mirror box in the body , which is faulty. This can be repaired but requires removing of the mirror box so that you can access the small drive which has a faulty gear and which drives the aperture mechanism. I charge +- $150 to repair this common problem.

Can't see whole image thru viewfinder when len is on

Your camera either has no focusing screen or the screen is dislodged. Remove lens and look above the mirror : looks like frosty glass.
