The most common thing that you can use for this is NET SEND via specified user. Just go to command prompt the type NET SEND (user) (message), the specified computer will receive the message that you send via NET SEND. But you can also send message from your existing work-group by selecting the specified computer and then right click on it and you will see a option to send message.

If you receive Server Error: 0x80048849 and/ or 0x80048820 in Windows Live Mail at home or while you're in your regular network, it may be due to the setting of the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) on the mail client.
If you get this synchronization error at a coffee shop, airport or a place from where you don't usually connect to the internet, we suggest synchronizing mail on your regular internet connection.
When the MTU setting on the mail client is larger than the MTU settings configured on network devices between your mail client and the mail client servers, some data packets may be lost, causing mail synchronization to fail.
Follow the steps given below to fix synchronization errors due to mismatched MTU settings:
Determine the MTU setting on your network device
Apply the MTU setting to your mail client
Determine the MTU setting on your network device
This is a trial and error process, and will be different for each user. You may have to repeat the procedure below a few times, before you can find out the MTU setting of your network device. Follow the steps below:
Open command prompt
Click Start ? Run ? Type cmd
In the Command Prompt Window, type in the following:
Ping <Mail server address> -f -l 1500
Notes:
The <Mail server address> is the IP address of the mail server that you are unable to synchronize with.
For Hotmail, 65.55.33.106 is the IP address for DeltaSync (mail.services.live.com).In this document we will be using this IP address as an example.
In the -l 1500, 1500 is the max MTU for Ethernet connections.
You may get an error like this (100% packet loss):
C:\Users\username>ping 65.55.33.106 -f -l 1500
Pinging 65.55.33.106 with 1500 bytes of data:
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

Ping statistics for 65.55.33.106:

If you received the error above, subtract 28 from the 1500 bytes of data. In the Command Prompt Window, type in the following:
Ping <Mail server address> -f -l 1472
If you get a 0% Packet Loss with 1472, it means the MTU setting of your configured network is 1472
Note: If you continue to receive the error described in (b) above, repeat the above steps by subtracting 28 from 1472 bytes of data. Repeat these steps until you get a message for 0% packet loss. If you were able to communicate with the mail server at an MTU size of 1424, you will receive the following:
C:\Users\username>ping 65.55.33.106 -f -l 1424
Pinging 65.55.33.106 with 1424 bytes of data:

Apply the MTU setting to your mail client
Follow the steps below:
Open command prompt as administrator (you must be an admin on the computer)
Click Start ? Run ? Type cmd
In the Command Prompt Window, type in the following:
netsh int ip show int
You will receive a message similar to the following. Find the connection name that you use to connect to the internet and note the Idx value
C:\Users\Username>netsh int ip show int
Idx Met MTU State Name
--- ---------- ---------- ------------ ---------------------------
1 50 1472 connected Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1
11 20 1472 connected Local Area Connection
To apply the correct MTU setting on your mail client, type the following in command prompt:
netsh int ip set interface <Idx value> mtu= <MTU setting of your router> store=persistent
Press Enter
For example, if the correct MTU setting was 1424 and Idx value of your connection was 11, you will type:
netsh int ip set interface 11 mtu=1424 store=persistent
If (c ) was successful, you will receive the confirmation message "Ok"
Exit command prompt
Restart your computer
Open WL Mail and see if the issue persists.

Services You Can Disable


There are quite a few services you can disable from starting automatically.
This would be to speed up your boot time and free resources.
They are only suggestions so I suggestion you read the description of each one when you run Services
and that you turn them off one at a time.

Some possibilities are:
  • Alerter - Sends alert messages to specified users that are connected to the server computer.
  • Application Management - Allows software to tap directly into the Add/Remove Programs feature via the Windows Installer technology.
  • Background Intelligent Transfer Service - The Background Intelligent Transfer service is used by programs (such as Windows AutoUpdate) to download files by using spare bandwidth.
  • Clipbook - ClipBook permits you to cut and paste text and graphics over the network.
  • Error Reporting Service - Allows applications to send error reports to Microsoft in the event of an application fault.
  • Fast User Switching - Windows XP allows users to switch quickly between accounts, without requiring them to log off.
  • Help and Support - Allows the XP Built-in Help and Support Center to run.
  • IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service - You don't need this if you have other software to create CDs.
  • Indexing Service - Indexes contents and properties of files on local and remote computers; provides rapid access to files through flexible querying language.

  • Remote Desktop Help Session Manager - Manages and controls Remote Assistance. If you are not using Remote Desktop you don't need this service.

  • Routing & Remote Access - Offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area network environments. Allows dial-in access.
  • Secondary Login - Enables starting processes under alternate credentials. This is what allows you to run an application as another user.

When I connect my modem dorectly to my pc it works fine with IP address 192.168.1.33. When I go through My D100 I have no connection anf the IP has changed to 192.168.0.100 If I reinstall on dynamic IP...

The IP address is assigned to the server or client software, but not to the physical workstation which the software or device is installed.

D-Link and virtually every other provider uses IP addresses from a Private IP Address class, which is special class of IP addresses that is reserved for private local networks (not to be confused with Virtual Private Networks, or VPN).

The default IP address is 192.168.0.x and assigned automatically. The most common IP address in any local system is 192.168.0.1.

Over the years, I've found that it is unnecessary to manually TCP?IP settings unless the automatic settings or configuaration has failed When I do have to change the settings, the following are used on Local Area Networks (LANs):

IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
DNS Do not change
Gateway IP
Address None because the default should be 192.168.1.0 or whatever was
automatically assigned.

Some additional information that should assist you in better understanding a LAN.

The SSID (Service Set IDentifier) is a token which identifies a 802.11 (Wi-Fi) network. The SSID is a key which is set by the wireless network administrator. You must know the SSID to connect to a 802.11 wireless network. However, the SSID can be discovered by network sniffing/scanning. By default, the SSID is part of the packet header for every packet sent over the WLAN.

SSID access points continuously broadcast radio signals which are received by client machines if enabled. Based on the automatic or manual configuration, the client can connect to the access point. A SSID is generally 32 bit long, but when displayed to the user, it is projected into a human readable ASCII format. Multiple access points can possibly share the same SSID if they are for the same wireless network. Many wireless access points support broadcasting multiple SSIDs, permitting the formation of Virtual Access Points. Such Virtual Access Points partition a single physical access point into many logical access points, each of which can have a special set of security and network settings.

SSID Security Issues

Every user of the network must configure the SSID into their system. If the network administrator seeks to lock a user out of the network, the administrator must change the SSID of the network, which will require reconfiguration of the SSID on every network node. Some 802.11 NICs allow you to configure several SSIDs at one time.

Default SSID's

Most 802.11 access point vendors allow the use of an SSID of "any" to enable an 802.11 NIC to connect to any 802.11 network. This is known to work with wireless equipment from Buffalo Technologies, Cisco, D-Link, Enterasys, Intermec, Lucent, and Proxim. Other default SSID's include "tsunami", "101", "RoamAbout Default Network Name", "Default SSID", and "Compaq".

Every time a client connects to the wireless network, the SSID is communicated in plain text format, which can easily be sniffed by eavesdropper using sniffing applications like Kismet. Hence, additional security techniques are required to be implemented in order to enhance the wireless security.

Major wireless problems.. I can connect to my wireless router (Thomson 585v8) but i cant connect to the internet. When it connects it says local only. How do i fix it so i can go on the internet..??


check if the ip address that you are getting begins with 192.169.x.x ( x = any number between 1 to 254) check that your router the DHCP service is enable and that there a network range set (example lets say your gateway ip is 192.158.0.1 then your dhcp by defult in most cases will look like this ip range 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 using a netmask of 255.255.255.0 that will give you 254 ips per network.)

if your ip start with 192.169.x.x the that means that your machine is not getting a real ip assigned to it all you get is an APIPA that is just a reseved ip by the system to fill out ethernet interfaces that don't have and static ip or are in a network without a DHCP server.

you can set a static ip in the client pc if you don't want to enable DHCP in the router.

when you see Local Only message it means that your pc hasn't detected a route to the outside network ( internet ) without a proper gateway you will not be able to get to the internet, your router ip is always your gateway.

example:

Router Client pc

IP 192,168.0.1 IP 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1

Hi there,
Enabling DHCP at the Client To enable the Windows NT DHCP client, you must log on as administrator at the Windows NT client.

Normally, you enable DHCP as part of the installation procedure for Microsoft TCP/IP, however, you can use this procedure if you have manually configured TCP/IP:
  1. Run Control Panel and choose Network.

    The Network Settings dialog box appears.
  2. Under Installed Network Software, select TCP/IP Protocol and then choose configure.

    The TCP/IP configuration dialog box appears.
  3. Select Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration.

    A Microsoft (MS) TCP/IP message appears, indicating that the DHCP Protocol attempts to configure the server automatically during system initialization.
  4. Choose Yes.

    A MS TCP/IP Configuration dialog box appears, displaying current TCP/IP configuration parameters. The IP Address and Subnet Mask boxes are not available (grayed out) and the manually configured values are no longer displayed.
  5. Choose OK to return to the Network Settings dialog box.
  6. Choose OK again.
  7. Shut down and restart the computer.
To enable DHCP on a Windows for Workgroups client if TCP/IP is not installed yet:
  1. Use Network Setup to install the MS TCP/IP-32 3.11 protocol.
  2. In the MS TCP/IP Configuration dialog box, select the Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration check box, and choose Continue.
  3. Restart the computer to initialize TCP/IP using DHCP.
To enable DHCP on a Windows for Workgroups client if TCP/IP is installed:
  1. To access the Network Drivers dialog box, run Network Setup.
  2. Select Microsoft TCP/IP-32 3.11, and then choose Setup.
  3. In the MS TCP/IP Configuration dialog box, select the Enable Automatic DHCP Configuration check box, and choose continue.

    A message box appears indicating that the configuration of DHCP overrides any values established locally.
  4. Choose Yes.
  5. To initialize TCP/IP using DHCP information, restart the computer.

What version of software are you running? I have noticed issue with ssh on version 8.2(3) and below.

You can try to remove all ssh access and then add it back. Also you can try zeroizing and regenerating the crypto key.

Try to use DirectX Diagnostic Tool, you can see the network there click Test Direct Play. Choose user name, service provider and you can choose create or join the session... If this is for Cafe station, you can use cafesuite you can control you client. It is very useful for the user.
