Go into Skype sounds setting and make sure the microphone is turned on then go to the computer sounds settings and make sure the microphone is turned on.
YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT NEW RELEASE LEVEL IS NOT SUPPORTED ON WINDOWS
XP
I just bought a HP webcam, downloaded this latest version of SKYPE and could not get it to work. Last night I spent over 2 hours with HP support. The problem resolution was that Skype 5.0 does not work with XP. HP support installed SKYPE V4.2.0.169 and got it working. Your download web page still says download new version...
If you use your webcam in different programs it may be still hooked up on one. Try re-booting your webcam software Mine, I just unplug it and plug it back in. As yours is built in - expand the imaging folder in Device Manager - Right click on the webcam text and toggle between 'disable' and 'enable' leaving it disabled for a few seconds - long enough to re-boot.
Sometimes webcam software can still be hooked up on a previous program where it was being used, even if the program was correctly exited. Just reboot your webcam software by unplugging the webcam from the USB port for a couple of seconds Re-check your settings
Start Skype.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Audio Settings.
Select your webcam as the default microphone. ( If it has a built in mic )
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Video Settings.
Select your webcam as the default Webcam.
Click Save.
Test LifeCam by making a Skype test call.

hello you've probably given up and binned the cam by now - we nearly did. but solved it last night. It's the annoying photo editing program that opens automatically when your camera opens up that's interfering with Skype. called magic-i or something like that. Remove that from your comp and the camera works fine. good luck!!
I had this problem on my PC and I tried everything from updating drivers to re installing the software and updating my graphics card but nothing seemed to work.
And then as a last resort I right clicked on the icon on my desktop and chose properties and clicked on the Compatability tab and unchecked on display settings Run in 640x480 screen resolution.
This worked and did not affect the webcam in anyway.
