Swap Magic Problems

I put the Flip Top Cover to my SCPH-77004 PS2. I then put the Swap Magic 3.6 PAL version DVD disk (because i wanted to play a DVD-R backup PS2 game). The first screen showed: "SWAP MAGIC 3 plus, Version 3.6", the second screen showed: "Load Program, Video Mode: Normal". Before watching videos on YouTube about how to use Swap Magic Disks, i thought that after the second screen there should be a third screen displaying "SWAP" (I thought this, because the front cover of the Swap Magic disks showed this 3rd screen with the above 2 screens). This screen of course never showed up, so i restarted PS2 many times trying different Video Modes (Normal,PAL, NTSC) and different Boots (Normal, Special). After getting disapointed because i was expecting (wrongly) the screen with "SWAP" to show up, i opened the Flip Top Cover, waited for the Magic disk to stop spin and changed the disk with my DVD-R backup. I got an error message. I don't remember exactly the words of the error message, but i remember the words "TOC" and i think "...smaller disk". After this, any disk i use doesn't spin and i get the message: "No data".
During the above process i didn't use a memory card.
I would appreciate if you could help?

I want to get further assistance.

Eagle338 gave the following answer to the above message:
"TOC disk error normaly occurs when tool 1 of the set that goes in the small square hole at the front left of the drive bay above the power switch is missing or installed wrong
have a look at this http://www.mod-chip.com/Lite/Magic_Key_2..."

I have a lot of questions to make to eagle338:
What is tool 1? Where exactly is this small square hole? Have you got a picture or a diagram of what you are talking about? What you suggest i must do? Why after installing the Flip Top Cover it was spining and after putting the backup DVD-R it stopped spining?
    Clicking onhttp://www.mod-chip.com/Lite/Magic_Key_2... took me to www.mod-chip.com. I went tohttp://www.mod-chip.com/Lite but i didn't find Magic_Key_2_PS2_Install_Lite.pdf!

    IrishDruid i have news!
Before reading your solution, i put pressure on the Flip Top at the rear side and it start spining and of course reading!
I then read your solution. So you were right. Bravo!
But my problem hasn't been solved yet, because my purpose is to play backup games.
After the Swap Magic disk stops to spin i put the backup DVD-R game and i get the massage: "Not a valid PS2 disk".
I used Alcohol 120% to make the backup: I used the Alcohol Image Making Wizard, i chose Never Separate and didn't change anything else (i didn't chose Datatype).
I then found the folder with the mds and mdf files. I run Alcohol again and used the Image Burning Wizard. I used a DVD-R (Verbatim DVD-R 4.7) to burn the image with a medium speed.
So what did i do wrong?

1/.How can i realise, when i am renting or buying, if the original game that i want to back up, is dual layer or single layer? And how can i realise this afterwoods at the PC? If the size of the file at the hard disk is smaller than 4.3GB, that means that the original disk was a DVD5?
2/.The empty disks i use to burn DVDloader and the backup games must be DVD-R,+R,-RW or +RW?
3/.At step 5 of how to use DVDloader for TOC refresh, i can use any original PS2 game or it must be the original game which backup you want to play? For example if you want to play the backup Transformers game, at step 5 you must use the original Transformers or any other title?
    4/.What is GTA?
5/.I must use a memory card?
6/.Am i OK using Alcohol 120% or it is better to use other software for making backups?
7/.How can i minimize the possibilities of a bad burn? Using a specific kind of empty disk or updating the recorders firmware for example can help for less risk?

  • fx27 Apr 30, 2008

    Hi,
I have good news! My PS2 finaly played a backup game (Transformers)without DVDloader. After Swap Magic DVD disk i put in the backup DVD and it played! I will try to backup some other games to make sure this method always works.
Before closing this ticket with a FixYa! Rating under your solution, i want to ask: 1/.In which cases we need DVDloader (TOC refresh)?
2/.If a DVD game has CSS protection, i can use Slysoft AnyDVD before Alcohol 120% or there is a better solution?
3/.If i find any problems backing up other PS2 titles, after closing this ticket, how can i reply to you?

  • fx27 Apr 30, 2008

If you want to make a backup of a PS2 DVD game which has CSS protection what do you do?

  • fx27 May 01, 2008

I backed up 3 more games with success.
    So good job IrishDruid!

Hello fx27,

TOC is the “Table of Contents” for the disc your using. A “High TOC” disc would be one that contains a lot of data.

The disk is not spinning because the flip top is not making contact with the sensors. Make sure the flip top is installed correctly. If the sensors are still not pushed down, boot up the swap magic disk and GENTLY put pressure on top of the flip top and see if the disk begins to be read. If it does, this means it is definitely the sensors. Open the ps2 and put a piece of thick tape over the rear sensor and a piece of tissue paper in the hole where the front cover opens. This should solve the problem. Please take a look at THIS link to show you how to do it.

If that doesn’t work, use DVDLoader to do the TOC refresh.

  1. Boot your Swap Magic disc.
  2. Swap in DVDLoader disc.
  3. Press X.
  4. At the Change the Disc and press X to Play prompt, press the Triangle button to stop the CDLoader/DVDLoader disc from spinning.
  5. Put your large-TOC original PS2 DVD-5 disc in. Press Triangle to start the disc spinning again.
  6. Press X to make CDLoader/DVDLoader read the TOC from the large-TOC disc.
  7. At the Put in a DVDR by EA Method and Press X to Play prompt, swap in your desired large-enough-TOC-to-be-annoying backup disc and press X.
Just for reference, this method works for all PS2 versions. In non-slimline PS2s, the Triangle button will eject/load the disc tray. On slimline PS2s, it will simply stop/start the disc's rotation

Hope that helps...Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

P.S. Before you assign a rating, please make sure that the issue is resolved or you are satisfied. If not, please post back as to what you did, and/or any other questions you may have, and I will try to assist you as best I can. Please do not assign an ‘Inappropriate’ or ‘Thanks for trying’ rating if your issue is not resolved after the first response itself, as sometimes a bit of to and fro dialogue may be necessary before we can find a fix or an answer to your query.

Please note, Dual-layer games do not work, period, and must be ripped to DVD5. Also, if your game is more than 4.4Gb, it may not work, as that is about the max Swap Magic 3.6 can handle.
    I
f you're using 16x speed discs it's best to burn them at 8x, usually
the rule of thumb is to burn the disc at half it's max speed.

use DVDLoader to do the TOC refresh.

    1. Boot your Swap Magic disc.

    2. Swap in DVDLoader disc.

    3. Press X.

    4. At the Change the Disc and
      press X to Play
prompt, press the Triangle button to stop the
      CDLoader/DVDLoader disc from spinning.

    5. Put your large-TOC original
PS2 DVD-5 disc in. Press Triangle to start the disc spinning again.

    6. Press X to make
CDLoader/DVDLoader read the TOC from the large-TOC disc.

    7. At the Put in a DVDR by EA
Method and Press X to Play
prompt, swap in your backup disc and press X.
You can download DVDLoader v7 from HERE, if you dont have it. Just choose the version from the many available.

    That should work now.

    Clarification:

In the solution I provided, point 5. says "Put your large-TOC original
PS2 DVD-5 disc in. Press Triangle to start the disc spinning again."
You will have to use a large original PS2 disc..say GTA or something like that to refresh the TOC, as PS2 games have a copyright protect which is almost impossible to copy. But once loaded from an original game, it "stays" in the PS2's memory so that you can insert a backup disc and load it from there.

    Cheers and Happy Gaming!

Here are some important instructions on how to make a copy of DVDloader:
    1) Download s/w from the link I gave.
    2) Download WinRar and DVD decrypter.

    3) Unpack file "
DVD loader v7 all" using winrar

    4) Go to were u unpacked it (default is usually DESKTOP)

    5) Open
DVD decrypter, change its mode to "ISO, then WRITE"

    6) Click the little file icon, then choose the
    DVD loader (the dvd
loader icon won't be the usual
DVD decrypter icon, it will now be a
    winrar icon)

    7) Once you have clicked the
DVD loader, change the burn speed to
the lowest you can go ( THIS IS IMPORTANT) (LESS RISK OF A BAD BURN)

    8) Now click on the picture hard drive then arrow to a disk, this will start to burn your DVD loader.

    Hello fx27,

    In response to your questions:

    1. The
original can be dual; just that the backup copy shouldn’t. Generally, all
games out there are either in CD or DVD5 format. Haven’t seen any dual
layer DVD’s out there yet..If the size is below 4.5 doesn’t necessarily
mean that it is DVD5, but as I said, I haven’t seen dula layer DVD’s yet.

    2. Any
disk is OK, as long as they are made by a standard, reliable company, and
they are not Dual Layer or BluRay.

    3. During
the TOC refresh, you can use ANY large size original PS2 game; it doesn’t
have to be the same as the backup game you wish to play. We just want the
      copyright into the PS2’s memory.

    4. GTA is the short form for
“GRAND THEFT AUTO” a very popular game..There are about 4-5 different
editions, and the latest is called GTA IV – should be out in the market in
few days’ time, if it isn’t out already. This was just for an example. You can use ANY large size game, something that has lots of videos, etc in the game.

    5. It is
a good idea to use a memory card if you want to save the progress of your
game, but it isn’t really necessary.

    6. Alcohol
120% is one of the BEST out there. Good buy.

    7. Well,
like I said, usually the rule of thumb is to burn the disc at half it's
max speed. If you're using 16x speed discs it's best to burn them at 8x
and so on. Any good quality CD/DVD will do.

Hope that answers your questions :)

Great to hear that you got it working! As for your
    questions,

    1. Generally
you do a TOC refresh when the backup disk is not installing after Swap
Magic, or , you get a TOC error.

    2. Slysoft
AnyDVD only removes the protection of encrypted MOVIE DVD’s, so that you
can play DVD’s from one region in another region. It does NOT remove the copyright code of PS2 Cd’s. That’s
why we have Swap Magic :) If there
was a method to remove that niggly code, we could just insert the backup
disks directly! Just simply follow the same method you used to backup
Transformers, and you should be OK. You will always come across the odd
one, but in general, it should work.

    3. Just
below my icon/avatar is an “Ask Me” button. Click on that and bookmark the
page that opens..Oh yes, and make sure that you are logged into fixya.com
with the same nick – fx27

Cheers, and thanks for the rating in advance :)

ALL PS2 DVD's have protection. Simply use alcohol120% to backup, and swap magic to play.
There is, as of today, no known method/software to remove the protection.
You got it right with Transformers, keep the same method to make new backups!

You won't be able to play any pirated games without installing a mod chip in your ps2 or without having some sort of software/codebreaker running from a USB drive attached to the ps2. Software such as Swap Magic (you can google it) and a flip/slide tool (a plastic card will do) will allow you to do this but it is illegal and I don't recommend it.

I hope this helps! If this did help you, please give a thumbs up!

I want to play duplicate dvds on my ps2 but i am not able to do what should i do can i do it at home

  1. If you have backed up a game for ps2, you're going to need a mod chip or swap magic for your ps2 so it can read the disc, so first things first, BUY A MODIFICATION TOOL!!!
  2. 2You should try using Swap Magic, because it's the easiest, and you won't need to modify your PlayStation too much.
  3. 3But if you use SWAP MAGIC, you will also need a special mod chip, SLIDE TOOL, or a FLIP TOP COVER, you can learn more about those on the swapmagic website
  4. 4Read directions on the installation of mod chip, and swap magic before you do anything (you don't want to mess up, or else your ps2 won't work properly).
  5. 5Install your modchip/flip top cover/slide tool. (This is important, because it allows the disc to be removed and "swapped" without the PlayStation knowing).
  6. 6Follow directions that came with your swap magic discs, and you're basically ready to go!
  7. 7HOW TO USE SWAP MAGIC,Note you must have Swap magic 3.6 to boot on slimline ps2 and you need to do a none solder modding(no soldering)

Purchase a flip top (recommended). Let's assume you have the flip top and a copied ps2 game
  1. 1Now Insert the swap magic disc into the ps2,
  2. 2Press power on button until screens comes up.
    • With option that says load cd open the top cover of the flip top.
    • And take out the cd when it stops spinning.
  3. 3Now insert your Copied game and click Load CD.
  4. 4its that easy

How can i play burn disc in my ps2?model ntsc-10000

I understand not wanting to spend any money on a mod solution, however the alternative is this:http://www.geocities.com/raibee/knife.html Sticking a knife in your PS2 and prying the disc tray open. One false move and say sayonara to your eject motor. Notice the guide says if you are unsure of this, DO NOT ATTEMPT. You can pick up swap magic and a flip top bundled for about $40 from a myriad of sites. Why risk damaging your PS2 just to save a few bucks. If your gonna play back ups or imports, do it right, pick up SMD and a flip top

Ps2 scph 77001 won't play backups on swap magic 3.6

This is a problem that has too many IF's in it lol. Let's take it from the top shall we?

When you said that you owned other PS2's were they the thick ones or the slim ones. Swap magic works best in the "thick older" models. In these new slimline ones it's got issues. That model number you posted belongs to a slimline model.

So since you're using a slimline model, I have to ask, Have you blocked the 2 sensors that you need to block in order to use swap magic. The slimline models are not like the older thick models. You need to block two sensors under the flip top so when you open the flip top the PS2 still thinks there is no swapping going on. If you have not blocked these sensors head over to youtube.com and start watchin vids with seach "how to block slim PS2 sensors" or "how to block slimline PS2 sensors" out of the three sensors you only really need to block two. If you have not done this at all, that is reason why it's not working. On older PS2 models you used a slidecard or some form of a flip top to swap out your disks. Nothing has changed on these slimline models. The PS2 still needs to be tricked out so it doesn't think you're swapping disks in and outa the system.

Hope that helps,

You need to buy those games which says PAL on it...Usually they have those PAL indications on the top right corner of the CASE of the DVD...of course you won't be able to play those NTSC games...it's just a compatibility issue, i think...cause your PS2 is a PAL model...
