Question about Garden

2 Answers

I purchased a home with lawn problems. I used Scott's at my previous residence where I had an enviable tiff-way bermuda. No problem with weeds as long as I kept the bermuda healthy. But my new home's lawn needed aerating and liming (done) and many bare spots had to cover over. But my biggest problem is 3 different grass types in my front yard alone: bermuda, zoysia and st augustine. Is there a way to kill off 2 of these? I am partial to bermuda but i would be happy with any of the 3 so long as it was just one. Thanks!

What I am hoping for is a way to kill 2 types of grass (not just the weeds) and leave the bermuda

  • Rick Jul 31, 2010

it will take a while for me to get through all the suggested websites - I was hoping for some informtaive expertise. When I google searched my problem it led me to fixya and the possibility of asking Scott's expert. I dont think the 1st person to answer understood exactly what I wanted to know. And the second person answering gave me a lot of places to do research but still didnt answer the question as to whether it was possible. It seems a true expert on the subject would be able to say yes or no as to whether it can be done and then give me the places to find my solution. This is the 1st time i have closed a question unsatisfactorily.

Scotts will not cut the mustard on these weeds. Baer liquid weed killer will be your best bet. You should purchase the type that requires you to mix it inside a sprayer before application. You will also have to spray the lawn at least two times to get rid of these unwanted grasses/weeds, the directions expaline the time period for application. i too have the same problem with my Kentucky Blue, and I find myself pulling weeds even after application of the previous chemical. I noticed this year an increase in these unwanted grasses, but I am not sure why.
I also contemplated calling Lawn Doctor for Herbicidal application to combat this issue. If I fail this fall, I will contact them for a solution.
The Baer product does work, but it seems the attack needs a little more.

So you're saying I can use a Behr product that will kill everything (zoysia & st augstine) but not harm the bermuda?

Their products are here, but they don't tell you the usage. It has to be on the label by law. The rear label usually lifts up to reveal a small book of three or four pages. If it isn't there, contact the company via the website.

http://www.spectracide.com/Products-and-Solutions/Lawn-Weed-Killers.aspx

The does have label details here
http://www.spectracide.com/Customer-Help/Labels-and-MSDS.aspx
For the Spectracide it is 1/2 oz to a gallon, but it depends on what type of grass you have. I will copy and paste the label details, but I doubt the format will stick, but it is all there.

My husband used round-up on our lawn thinking it would only kill weeds. The whole lawn has big yellowed dead patches. It's been raining for two weeks and everyone's lawns are lush and green :( Is...

A lot depends on what part of the country you are in and if you have cool season or warm season turf. Cool seasons are fescue, bluegrass, perennial rye, etc. Warm seasons are bermuda, zoysia, centipede, St. Augustine, just to name a few.

If its cool season turf, you could heavily aerify, fertilize, and re-seed right now. Hope for rain through the summer, or use irrigation of you have it. For my area, early fall is the best time for seeding cool season grasses. If it was only Roundup you should have no lingering effects from its application.

If its warm season turf, it may not actually be completely dead, especially if the application wasn't done properly. Your lawn may just be sick. It actually can take a lot of chemicals to permanently damage most warm season turf. If thats what you have, some water and fertilzer may improve the appearance. Beyond that, sprigging or sodding may be your only option, since not many warm seasons are available by seed.

Time will help both situations, especially the latter.

I have a MightyLite weed eater - the plastic bobble has a crack. What are my options besides purchasing a new weed eater? Purchased at Home depot.

You don't have to purchase a new one. Parts for it are available. This online parts house is good. If you are saying you need the plastic bubble for the carburetor, it is here.
http://www.ereplacementparts.com/homelite-misc-parts-c-18807_24213.html
There are 3 models listed. They are listed in the 4th section of misc. parts and are items 9,10, and 11.
All the other parts for your machine are listed here too:
