I have a Dell desktop computer & monitor. Tonight, I was checking the status of an order being shipped by UPS. When the UPS tracker can't find an order, an error message is overlaid on the page - so you can see the original page under it through a netty, foggy, cloudy effect. This is something on the site, not my computer After getting the error message tonight, though, everything on my computer looks like it's overlaid with a film/net/fog/cloudy effect. I tried setting the monitor back to factory settings. I tried rebooting. No joy. Please tell me it's not dying! Thanks!

No, i do not think it is dying... but i think it is infeced with some nasty... for future reference, you need to state what operating system and what model of the computer, dell is making over 500 models over the years, telepathy do not work very well... i assume you have some variant of windows

re-start computer in safe mode with networking enabled, download any on line virus checker and run it... it can take some hours before it finishes. follow that procedure.

1. switch off computer - leave for at least 20sec
2. switch on and repeatedly click f8, you will have selelction screen
3. select safe mode with networking
4. log as an administrator, is screen still cloudy? was screen cloudy during boot up? if it is cloudy all the time, there maybe something wrong with videocard or with monitor. let assume that it is clear:
5. go to and download they free scanner
6. install and run the scanner, follow instructions
7. download and run ccleaner, remove all junk and clean your startup as well as registry.
8. repeat step 1 to 4
9. go to and download they free version, install and run it, follow instructions
10. repeat step 1 to 4
11. go to and download and run they malware scanner.
12. switch off computer and wait 20 sec, start and use normally.

if this is not a software problem, then follow this procedure:
1. borrow known working monitor and check quality of the display, is cloudy?
2. connect your monitor to another computer, is cloudy?
3. if yes is in first instance, your computer is responcible, if yes is in second instance, your monitor is responcible.

as you did not stated what model and operating system, i cannot provide more detailed advice. advice given is correct for virtually all computers with similar problem in existence...

Monitor on my dell Inspiron one i019-1818bga does not come on. Power button is white.

Check with an external monitor. That will tell you if the monitor is faulty or the mother board has issues.

It sounds like the Video card has suffered a catastrophic failure. Remove & go to a parts store or order from someone like or ebay or If you don't know how to use someones computer to look up "How to change the Video Card on a Desktop PC" & you will find a video of how to.

Power supply malfunctioning

Most surge protection power boards will protect computer equipment from mains spikes and surges.
A better and more expensive solution is to use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). These units provide surge and spike protection and also provide power in the event of mains power failure.
Make sure you select an UPS model that meet the power requirements of all your computer equipment that is connected to the UPS with a mains down time of say 1/2 hour to give you time to shut down your computer in an orderly manner.

How do you check the battery status?

Check battery voltage using Volt meter=> it should be about 12.6 to 13.8 vdc.
Pull the battery out... checking the deforming at the case ..such as "swelling"... if yes .. replace the battery.
Replacement battery is about 10-20 dollars on e-bay (watch for shipping charge and size. and terminal connection sizes )
The average life of battery on UPS is about 5-7-10 years wi)th UPS plugged in (Charging
One I had my local Autozone checked my 12 VDC -8 AH ... ask them to set CCA at about 100 AMP...
for 12 VDC -14 AH ask them to set CCA about 200 AMP.
For a 12 VDC -75 AH (group 24) they set the load on their tester at about 700-900 CCA.
You can also buy a manual battery load test at Harror freigt tool for about $20 US dollars (On sale)

you can try checking if there's a HDD led activity but as per what you have said, this is either caused by a power supply or mainboard failure. Sometimes, surge strips cannot guarantee that it will protect your computer from unstable current caused by on and off of the electricity.

My PC often restarts automatically when the main supply goes.

Hook up your computer directly to a surge protector or wall outlet and leave it on for a while and see if it restarts automatically, if it doesn't then you know your computer is fine.

If your computer still restarts automatically even with it not hooked up to a UPS then you know at that point theres a problem with the computer and not the UPS backups that have been plugged up to it. At that point it can be anything from an operating system issue to a hardware issue.

Also if you can verify that the computer is fine without it being hooked to a UPS then make sure the next UPS you get you only hook up the desktop and the monitor to it. This is a good way to make sure not to many items are hooked up to it that may be drawing more amps then normal.

Dell monitor p971 driver win vista

(I assume you have this monitor from your old computer as dell doesn't ship it anymore ) P971 is a CRT monitor and comparatively very old dell does not have vista compatible driver for these monitors at all.
