Question about Bosch 24 in. SMU40 Built-in Dishwasher

1 Answer

I have a Bosch SMU2046UC/14 dishwasher that makes some noise but will not start the wash cycle. I found that the noise was from the timer motor by removing the front of the door. The timer continues to run and but only advances until half way through the wash cycle where it stops permanently. Is this a problem with the timer or could something else be causing this problem.

HI. The timer motor mechanism regulates the length of time power is to be routed to each component. If the timer motor does not advance properly, it can result in a wide range of problems. Common symptoms will usually include sticking in a cycle(failing to advance), cycle times may run too long, or failure of the dishwasher unit to function or power up. Your symptoms greatly indicate that the timer unit is malfunctioning in this particular unit. The necessary actions are to replace the timer, asap.

You can actual test this device if you wish. Follow the procedure below to confirm:

Once you have gained access to the part, you will notice that there are two motors. The smaller one is the rapid advance motor which operates when the wash cycle is canceled or reset. You do not need to test this one, but if you are having problems differentiating from the two, test them both. The "large" round motor housing has two wires extending from it. Follow the wires to the terminal connections. Now; Label the wires and connections so that you can properly reconnect them later. The wires are connected with slip on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals. You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors. Next; Set your multimeter to the ohms setting X1000. Touch one probe to each wire. A reading in the range of 2,000 to 3,500 ohms is normal for most dishwasher timer motors. If a schematic of your dishwasher can be located, it should indicate the proper resistance for your timer motor. The schematic may be in one of the service areas of your dishwasher or your owner's manual or inside your units door panel.. If your measurement varies substantially from normal range, the timer should be replaced.

  • NOTE_ This test is really not necessary in your case, due to the overwhelming symptoms you have stated in your post. It is quite safe to replace this damaged timer, if you wish. It is indeed damaged.

I am looking for a wiring diagram for a Bosch Dishwasher SMU2046UC/14.

There should be a wiring diagram and other service information on a piece of paper behind the toe kick cover plate. That's where I found mine. Good luck.

SMU2046UC: waste water won't empty. Wash cycle works like it should but waste water remains in the bottom of the dishwasher. Sounds like pump is humming and there don't seem to be any clogs in the system??

Most likely a blocked pump. You should be able to access the pump from the base of the unit under your filters. Remove the cover and rotate the pump impeller to free blockage then start any prog to check if pump is working,if OK reassemble, if not replace pump

Dishes are left with a white film.

The problem is hard water. Go to www.dishwasherfilter.com. They have a new product out that solves this problem once and for all. It filters the water entering your dishwasher and removes the hard minerals that cause these spots. Very affordable and guaranteed to leave your dishes looking amazing every time.

Bosch smu2046uc doesn't drain completely (water sits in the very bottom of the drain) and mildew builds up inside the dishwasher quickly--makes dishes dirty. How do I solve?

check the following parts for their operational value. replace any failed part.

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

Bosch dishwasher timer freezing

There is a recall on the control board of many of these models, butyour problem is likely not related. It sounds like a plugged drain system or a possible bad drain pump. That's why you are hearing the pump running constantly. I have written a guide to help. It is here. Thanks!

The pump motor is beginning to seize up. You may be able to take the dishwasher apart and lubricate the bearings and keep it going for a while, but at some point you will likely have to replace the pump motor assembly.
