It is a 1TB WD Elements Desktop, about 2 months old if that. I am using Windows XP and it is mainly used to store video's on it. Currently should have approx 250GB used.

Thanks, gone through that before and nothing is of use to me there.
Have seen this seems to be a common problem with WD. When I contacted WD, all they suggested is that I send it to them, which requires me to send of overseas.
If I used one of the approved data retrieval experts to not void my warranty, min cost of $250, yet the drive only cost me $98.

I have a Western Digital MyBook Essential 320GB and it is not responding. The green light is on, but the disk isn't even spinning. I've had this thing for at least 4 years. Is it toast? The harddisk will...

If the hard disk is not spinning then the hard disk is faulty.
The adapter case may be OK especially when you plug it into a working computer's USB port and it detects the adapter but not the hard drive.

Flashing blue light on external WD hard drive & not recognised

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive
