Question about Campbell Hausfeld 26 - Gallon Air Compressor

1 Answer

I have a CH 5.5hp, 26 gallon 150psi max air compressor that runs constantly even after passing desired psi with a max psi of 100. However, even after 100psi the motor keeps running with no increase of psi. The seems to be no obvious leads anywhere...

When your compressor pressure reaches the cut out level, and the compressor doesn't stop, that means that electricity is still flowing to your electric motor, and it keeps running.

The compressor will then keep running until the pressure relief valve opens, and that should bleed the pressure in system down below a danger level even though, then, your compressor will keep running until something fails.

If the compressor won't shut off at the cut out pressure, it's 99% sure that your cut out pressure points in the switch are staying closed allowing power to flow to the compressor motor, and the simplest thing to do is to replace the pressure switch.
You could try this... but it will be for short duration and happen again.
IF contacts are stuck, these contacts are not real good with high voltage.Disconnect the power and manually pull the contacts apart if they go right back together then your air adjustment need to be readjusted, if they stay apart check the contacts for burned spots. You can sand them to clean them up but this will happen again over time. Bigger compressors use magnetic starters which use low voltage to the regulator and the Magnetic starter controls the high voltage.

THank you for your response, however, I'm still a bit perplexed.

If it is these contacts staying open, why does the psi not get any higher than 100 psi?

A couple of times you said even if I make the effort to "fix" the problem, it will more than likely return. In each case, why do you think this?

If you were me, tell me exactly what you would do...step by step so I may have the best chance of success.

    Thank You!

The preset safety factor is set to 100PSI The maximum amount of pressure that the tank can reach as determined by the guage of the metal, weld and safety tests
The safety release valve prevents it from escalating beyond this level of pressure recommendation, even though it continues to run. If it didn't "bleed off the pressure it would eventually split the tank or blow the safety valve to smithereens

Despite fixing the points by cleaning them the metal has become weakend and will burn or stick easily again, locking the contacts again . The only true method of dealing with it is to CHANGE the contacts, cleaning them is only a temporary measure till new contacts can be fitted.

My D55141 heavy duty 2gal (7.6L) 150 psi max builds pressure up to around 150 releases pop off valve then keeps running, what causes this problem?

The pressure switch is either out of adjustment or has failed. The compressor should shut off at a much lower pressure than the safety valve (~100 psi)

Compressor relief valve opens 150lbs on my d55141

That is the compressor's holding capacity 150psi. Therefore, the cut-out pressure has been reached. The safety valve opens to relieve the excessive psi. Compressor should come on at 120 psi.

Sounds like the pressure switch is shorted together. Unwire the switch and see if it shuts off.

I have a model FP209501 Air Compressor 2 Gallon,

2 gallons is small to begin with u need to buy an in line pressure adjuster/regulator their a few bucks and can be attached to the paint gun or line and will keep the pressure at ur adjustment the regulator on the tank sets the tank pressure at 50 so when u us it will let it drop down to about 45 than start up to build the pressure up to 50 than shuts off than repeats it self the inline keeps pressure steady even if tanks are at 200 psi
