Weird problem with developing interests...

By LiZzIe - usenet poster

I've got a few Sims that seem to have a difficult time developing
interests.  I direct the Sim to "Read About..." whatever and the Sim starts
reading, but the moment the meter reaches the top, the Sim stands up and
the magazine disappears.  No more interest building.  Doesn't matter which
interest I try this with... I get the same results.

Anyone seen anything like this?

I found (I don't know if this is normal or not) My Sims can only build a
certain amount of each interest. I mean I tried to get one sim to have full
interest in EVERYTHING, but as one goes up, another interest goes down. Is
this a normal thing? I don't know...

Ah-- I see what you mean now. If you want interests to show up on sims
that have not been played since the HD upgrade, you have to open the
house, save the house (by going to neighborhood screen) then reopen &
interests will appear correctly.

Disappearing magazines, I have not encountered.

As for vacation, I have been unable to delete a sim with the
Move_objects cheat since install. At least the fruitcake still works.

Yeah.  It's a balance system I guess.  Developing one interest causes
another to diminish.  I haven't noticed a pattern since it's been different
from Sim to Sim.  I think it depends on their personality.

Yes, it's normal.  Look at it this way.  sims have interests, along with
disinterests.  What you want to do when you work the interests is to match
both.  that way, when a sim says that he hates the outdoors, the other one
will reply that she hates the outdoors as well, and little plus signs will
appear, because they share the same disinterest.  A sim with all the
interests maxed out would fail when a sim he's trying to make friends with
said "I hate [insert any interest]", and minus signs would appear.  That's
not the way to make friends.  It's the main reason that I say that interest
editors that allow you to add more points are not only stupid, they are
counterproductive.  Yet, people still keep trying to get their favorite sim
all those maxed interests...

Oh, well, hmmm... I just delete them.  More fun that way because when you
delete a whole family and then click on their faces, they appear in order
like they're marching in formation.

Anyway, the interest glitch and disappearing magazines thing happened in
HD as well.  It just started happening more often when SV was installed.

You can still delete Sims.  It's kind of tricky to get the Sim selected
sometimes though.  And another cool thing is if you select the maid and
move here out of the way, she'll slide across the floor back to where she
was.  In previous versions she would just disappear and reappear where
she was.

No, the magazines are disappearing altogether.  The best part is the Sim
is standing there idle and the reading sound effects are still going...
hmm hmm hmm hmmm hmm hmm hmm hmmm ahhhh.

Also, the Sim only has like 3 interest areas that can be built.  The rest
are zero'd out.

Anyway, the way I found to get around this is to delete the Sim with the
"move_objects on" cheat and the interests reappear.  I used this back
when the crystal ball in LL messed up the "wash hands" action.

What I've been able to deduce is that this problem only affects Sims who
haven't been used since the last version.  You know how it sometimes
resets the household after upgrades and EP installs?  It's also obvious
which Sims are affected because they have almost no interests at all.

So I go into Buy mode, move_objects on, select Sim, delete Sim, go back
into Live mode, click deleted Sim's picture, Sim reappears with original
interests intact.

Once the interest meter goes to the top, the read action is done & the
sim goes on to other actions. Look around on the floor near where the
sim was sitting. Mine often set the magazines on the floor instead of
a table after they read, some rugs may hide the magazine. If the
magazines are really disappearing altogether, i have no idea what is
going on, I never had that happen. I can usually get a lot of mileage
out of magazines, you are supposed to have several days that they're
still good & readable.

Once read, servo, the maid or butler will zero in on magazines & toss
them, even if they can still be read. You gotta watch those guys...

Oh, and did you know that old magazines can be sold for like $460?
Manage to keep one for several days & try deleting it with the hand
tool.

Yeah, this has happened to me too.  But it seems to be intermittent.  Sometimes
they will happily read when told and interests go up but other times the
magazine disappears.  Haven't worked out a way around this yet though....
