Briigs and stratton 6.75hp runs but has gas streaming out of the carb. this is mounted to a troybuilt generator. Does this sound like a stuck float or a problem with the needle valve?

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly There is most likely debris in the needle and seat. This in turn causes the resultant fuel bowl overflow. Remove the bowl, unscrew the float hinge pin screw (note the installed position) and remove both the float and the float needle. Then using something like a spray paint can lid allow the fuel from the tank to flow briefly. You can use a toothpick or jewelers screwdriver to clear any obstructions if necessary. INSPECT the float needle. It should have a nice taper to a point rubber tip. If the rubber is nicked our deteriorated it will have to be replaced.
Once you reinstall the float and needle (making sure the hinge pin screw is secured), test the float. It should shut off the fuel as the float is GENTLY raised to the level position. If it does not shut off you will need to change the needle and seat. Getting the seat out of the carb can be a challenge. In the shop we use compressed air into the gas line connection and hold the thumb over the needle hole tight but allow minimal air to pass through the hole. The rubber seat USUALLY floats up to the surface of the hole opening. If that does not work then we used ground off (straight end) drill bits to extract them. Installing the new seat is best accomplished by using the **** end of a drill bit.

This should stop your carb overflow problem. If you need help with parts information please pass your engine type model number.

The part number for most Briggs & Stratton needle and seat assys is 398188

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Turn on fuel cock, motor starts, after a few minutes gas starts flowing out of the carb at the air filter

The needle valve on the carbureator float is stuck open or has a little debris stuck in it. You will have to take the bowl off and clean out the seat for the needel valve. A Qtip or small wooden dowel works best.

Engine will not run, but will start with a starting fluid. I have changed the spark plug, air filter, oil, and fresh gas.

Sound`s like your not gettimg fuel. 1 take fuel line loose from carb. (have a bolt handy to plug gas line unless the gas is old then drain gas into a suitable container for disposal.)2nd take fuel bowl off of carb. should be 1 bolt thru the bottom holding the bowl on. Be carefull not to tear gaskett. Float assy. should drop down, but should not fall out. 3rd take aresole can of carb. cleaner with the straw attached and clean the float bowl, the float area. watch for over spray onto painted area, wear glasses to protect eyes. wipe off overspray as soon as possible.4th clean jet, place straw i,nto small metal tube that looks like a part of a metal inkpin located in the center of the float comming up from the bottom. 5th,open the choke/throttel plate inside the large opening in the carb and spray that area if you can see any metal trubes in that area place the straw into that and spray.Re assemble in reverse ordear that you took it apart. Be sure to pay attention to the gaskett or you will have leak`s. rre fill with fresh gas should start and run. If you do not use equipment every week then you may want to put a gas additive into the gas tank to help prevent this from reacureing. I use a product called Sea Foam Good Luck

Generator runs but wont idle up i change gas clean carb it will try to run when i turn circuit on?

Check the carb gaskets, the fuel bowl for dirt and float needle and seat. Bad gasket can cause loos of vacum and dirt can cause the float needle and float to get stuck.

Gas is being mtxed with the oil

This typically happens when the needle and float are stuck open. The fuel from the tank then runs through the carb and into the cyliners, down past the rngs and into the crackcase to mix with the oil.

You may have something stuck in the needle and seat or a dirty carb. If the unit has been setting a long time you may have varnish in the carb and you might need to replace the part.

Remove the float bowl nut and then the bowl of the carb will come off and you should be able to tell what you have.

Gas is streaming out of my overflow line.

I don't work on Harleys but I know it is a stuck float when the gas flows. The following is what I tell the Japanese bike owners.

This is a carb float being stuck open. Turn off the gas and drain the offending carb(s). Next, turn the gas back on and sharply tap the float bowl with the plastic handle of a screwdriver as the fuel bowl refills. The goal here is to vibrate the float to free it up. If doing this process a couple of times doesn’t free the float I would remove the offending carb(s) and clean with a spray carb cleaner. By the way, the float itself could be bad > filled with gas instead of air. Clean the air filter then re-mount carb(s).

Please rate this solution. Thanks!
