Question about Sansui Televison & Video

1 Answer

While watching the TV this morning, the picture went out. We still have sound, but the screen is wide horizontal bands of a blue-gray color, and the is a funny "whump, whump, whump' sound going on. The remote is also ineffective, as I tried to change channels to see if the station had gone off, or if our cable company was experiencing problems.

The video final has died. This is a major failure that could have been caused by a bunch of causes - none of them pretty, starting with a fried power source and exploded capacitors. BTW the funny sound is coming from the speakers, the audio amplifier is receiving unstable power which appears over the normal sound - also a sign that the power source is severely damaged.
To check for the causes the tv must be opened and tested by someone with experience. If you don't have that experience don't try to fix it yourself, you can damage it even further and hurt yourself in the process.

Our community had a severe thunderstorm/power outage a few days ago. Could that have been a contributing factor? I do have surge protectors between the household outlet and the TV and cable box.

Yes, power spikes generated by storms are most surely the primary cause. Surge protectors can help you, but only to a point - a direct hit will surely cause some damage.
You should check the box, it might have also been damaged .
BTW. the power spike could have gone in thru the cable wire, not thru the mains, this is why in severe thunderstorms you must disconnect ALL cables.

Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis.

To some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement.

I got multiple thin colors on the middle of the screen

My 3-year old 52-inch Toshiba flat panel TV (Model # 52RV53U, Serial # AM409000295) developed a display issue (purchased Aug. 2008, manufactured July 2008). Vertical multicolored lines appeared on the screen just left of center. The band of thin vertical bars is 5.5 inches wide. The lines are about 1/16-inch wide. They are stationary, always exactly in same place. They over-ride any other picture on the screen (no transparency). They are there all time even with no video inputs to the TV after the unit is turned on. See picture #1. The TV works well in every other respect, but, obviously, it is annoying to watch the picture with the color band blocking about 1/6 of the picture.

Further info, pics, comments, and updates on my Facebook page at

I already swapped out the TCON board with no improvement and replugged the TCON board cables with no improvement.

Most likely it is the flat panel tab bond failure (panel made by Samsung). Further updates will be on my Facebook page.

Picture is black except for colorful horizontal line across tv

It sounds like you need a DEFRAG Done. Have you put any new speakers or magnets near the TV? Has anyone had a magnet toy or things around the TV lately?

You are having a high voltage problem. Quite possibly in the horizontal deflection. I would check the horizontal output and regulator transistors.

No Picture / No Sound

What was happening before can put you close to what when out. If you had color problems or sound, or even picture going small. these are symptoms that causes the set to go out. If color look in the convergence area and look for blown fuses and bad resistors. If just went out the look at horizontal output transistor.

Horizontal lines center of Panasonic HDTV

Usually there is a capacitor in the pump up circuit and/or an IC in the vertical circuit that causes this problem. Contact Panasonic at: http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vServiceLocator?storeId=15001 To find a servicer in your area. This will give you an idea of the cost of repair. Hope this helps.
