Question about HP Computers & Internet

1 Answer

PC takes 4-5 minutes to go online. Can hidden icons on the bottom of the screen be partially responsible for this? Also, while typing in Search box, cursor stops flashing and prolongs what it is that I want to type in. DB

Sounds like you have virus/malware infections.
Also sounds like you have lots of un needed programs starting when you boot up.

'Need to see screen displaying contents of Maxtor 160 GB and icon to click on to display if needed.

Are you saying when you Click My Computer the hard drive (Local Drive C) is not showing up?

Are you able to see the Start at the bottom left portion of the screen?

Maybe a virus has hidden your files, folders and desktop icons. It might have hidden your start menu at the bottom left and the taskbar too.
Sounds like a virus has hidden your files and folders. When you click start do you see My Computer or is Start not there at the lower left on the screen?

If the Start is located at the bottom left then click it and see if you have things inside of it such as Programs or All Programs, etc.

Try the step below:
Open the Task Manager by clicking Ctrl+Alt+Del. Press and Hold the Ctrl key and the Alt Key, then hit the Del key. Run the Task Manger.
In the upper left hand corner of the Task Manager window click File then select New Task (Run...). When the Create New Task window opens type: explorer.exe and press OK. Look for My Computer on the left when explorer returns the results. Don't click the + sign to the left of My Computer, instead click directly on the words My Computer, then look to the right and you will see Local Disk C. Click on Local Disk C one time just to highlight it, you don't want to open it. Once you have it highlighted in blue go to the top of the window and click Tools/Folder Options/View and look down and select Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Things should start appearing if not you can open the Local Disk C drive and click Documents and Settings (Windows XP) or Users (Windows 7) and look down and find the userid or user folders and Right Click on the Folder and select Properties. Look down for the Attributes near the bottom and if the Hidden has check in the box Remove the Check and click Apply. When Prompted apply the setting to all subfolders so that they too will not be hidden. Depending on the of the folder this might take a few minutes. This should restore you back to being operational.

You should download and run MalwareBytes to get rid of the infection.
Go to www.google.com and in the search box type:"Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download andinstall malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When thesite opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do not click the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the GuiInterface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version or Decline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run a QUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be inred. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text document will open up showing you the results. You can close the text document and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTEDRESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When it finishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot your machine.

Or, if you're already logged into Vista as an administrator, you may see a box asking you if you would like to continue.

4. Once you have successfully passed through Microsoft's User Account Control roadblock, Vista will launch Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab.

4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.
