Question about Briggs & Stratton Ignition Kit 2-8 HP Engines with Breaker Point Ignition #5012D

Briggs & Stratton 5.25 HP Quantum VM engine suddenly quit in use and won't start. Gas and oil look fine, pull start is fine. No ignition I guess?

I assume this engine is mounted on a push mower. Did you hit something as a root or other object? If so you have broken the flywheel key, sometimes called a shear pin, it will not run. You will need to remove the flywheel cover and then look see if the pin is sheared off. Look down the crankshaft keyway and see if it has turned. If so, simply replace the flywheel key. This site describes in detail how to replace the key. http://www.ehow.com/how_5052524_replace-lawn-mower-flywheel-keys.html Here is a video of the procedure.

    Thanks Clay,

Yes it's a mower. I didn't hit anything but it's old. Is the part available locally or do I need to find it on the internet?

Any lawn mower shop has these keys in stock. They are very easy to break, even a backfire will break one. If you find the key is not broken then look at the spark plug and coil. Either one can cause a no start situation.

I pulled the flywheel and didn't see any sheer but there was a lot of wear. I'll replace the key and spark plug. Should I do the coil too since it's all apart? Is there a test for the coil?

I agree, replace the flywheel key if it is worn. It does not take much for it not to run. Know that there should be about .013 clearance between the magnet on the flywheel and coil pickup. To test the coil disconnect the kill wire from the coil. I am sure you do not have a coil tester on hand but you can make your own. Take an old spark plug you know it good and cut the electrode off so you have about a 1/4" gap for the spark to jump. Reason being is that is takes a good hot spark to start the engine and not so much to keep it running. Connect the spark plug to the plug wire and then ground it to anyplace on the mower. Lay it so it is grounded but do not hold it or you will get shocked. Take a piece of old rope and spin the engine over. It you see the spark jump that gap the coil is good. After you know the coil is good reconnect the kill wire and test it again to make sure the kill switch is not bad. If you see no spark then replace the coil. While you are there clean all rust from the outside edge of the flywheel especially where the magnets are located.

I have a 18 hp briggs and stratton engine that will not start

A few more things to check.
1. The oil level. If the oil level is low the oil level sensor will ground the ignition.
2. Check the wiring from the seat safety switch to make sure it is connected.
3. Follow the black wires from the ignition control module to make sure none of them are chaffing and do not have a chassis ground.

If you still have problems disconnect ONE lead from the oil level sensor and see if you have spark. Most of the time these oil level sensors are the common failure.

Briggs & stratton engine stops working - died and won't start

It sounds like it is time for a new ignition module. Get the model, type and code off the blower housing and go to www.precisionope.com. There you can look up the ignition module under OEM parts.

First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms

Drain oil... it is full of gasoline due to a bad float pin and rubber gromet in your carb. When your float pin and gromet fail, gas just keeps flowing into your carburetor, eventually flooding your motor with gas and oil mix.
