Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

2 Answers

How can I speed up my computer? It takes forever for anything to happen.Trying to access the internet could take 10 minutes or more. Even trying to open desktop applications at times takes several minutes. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you can offer.

The last solution didn't help things to get moving any quicker. It takes entirely too long for anything to open--5 minutes or more to be able to access anything on the internet; also too long to access anything on my desktop.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Before I start assisting your with tips and troubleshooting methods, please let me know the system configuration, only the Cpu, Ram and Hard disk details with the softwares (programs) installed on the system. Don't forget to include the name of the Antivirus installed on your system.

To find out the Cpu speed or details and Ram memory, right click "My Computer" > "Properties" and check out the details. You can also view the details about your system from the Device Manager [Right Click "My computer" > "Manage" and from the left pane select, "Device Manager"].

If you have problem finding and locating the device manager, please send (upload) me the Screen shot of your system's My Computer properties.

The problem could be Ram, Cpu overheating, Program/application or drivers conflict, Virus/malware/spyware etc.. problem. I'll assist you step by step.

Thank you.

Awaiting.

    Hi--

I'm not sure if this is the info you're looking for. If not, please let me know (you're dealing with a "computer illiterate" here!)

    Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.20 GHz

    219 GHz 384 mb RAM

Norton and McAfee seem to be the antivirus programs. Also have Malwarebytes installed. MS Word, Excel and Google earth are also.

    Hope that helps.

Yes and thanks for giving me the information. You have given me the correct information, and this is more than sufficient. No problem with the Cpu, it can handle multiple programs, but your ram should be upgraded, install at least 512 mb of ram (I recommend 1gb for unfailing performance). The main thing that slows down your system is Norton and MacAfee Antiviruses, you ram can never be able to handle those powerful antivirus and moreover, there're two, I would recommend you to uninstall both the antiviruses. No need to keep the Malwarebytes either. I'll give you another so that you can download and install on your system. For now, uninstall both the antivirus installed and let me know.

    Awaiting.

    Good luck.

    Hi--

Both anti-virus programs, as well as Malwarebytes have been uninstalled. Things seem to have gotten worse. It took 7 attempts (and ONE HOUR) to get a connection to the Internet--through Internet Explorer--couldn't get ANYTHING with Foxfire! Please provide that antivirus download as I don't like being without one. ALso please provide a phone # so that when this problem recurs, I have a way to resolve this issue in a more timely manner.

    Thank you.

  • ccmdk4 Aug 04, 2010

    Good morning--

Haven't heard from you yet regarding the antivirus info you said you'd provide. I'm a bit nervous not having any type of protection on my computer. Please provide the information you referenced in your email ASAP.

    Thanks.

Hello, I am sorry, I didn't receive any notification email from you. But today I got one and when I check, there's already two (if I am right). Please be patient, there's nothing to worry, if you have uninstalled the antiviruses, that's great now I will give you another software which will clean will clean all the registry files and unused system files as well as temporary files in You System.

Open the link, click "download now", wait for 20 seconds and again click "download file now". After it's download, install it and run the program, both "cleaner" and "registry", to run the cleaner, click "Run cleaner" after the program is opened and to run the registry, click "Registry" on the left pane and again click "Scan for issues" wait for few seconds, and again "Fix selected issues" and then "No" and again "Fix selected issues" > "Close"

Now restart your computer, you'll see how it's performance has been changed. I am still suggesting you to uninstall whatever program is possible to be reinstalled. That'll help you do all these faster, otherwise it'll take much time without any reason.

After you are done, let me know, since your system speed has increased, I am not going to give you the link where to download Free Antivirus (don't worry about the antivirus, there are tons of antivirus available on the net), but will test once again. If needed, i'll assist you to clean the motherboard and other internal components inside the cabinets.

    I wish you good luck.

    Thank You.

  • ccmdk4 Aug 04, 2010

    Hi

Okay--I've followed your procedure to clean up my computer. Is there a particular reason why you are not now going to provide me with the antivirus link? In that case, how do I get my Norton one back?

Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

  • Lebanon Raingam
    Lebanon Raingam Aug 04, 2010

Yes, there's a reason not sending you the antivirus. But it's for your good, not for me. Suppose if you install an antivirus before you run the cleaner or fix the registry, the same problem will occur and your system will become as it was like very slow.. Please don't open any suspicious mails or websites, until we are done, it'll keep you safe. I'll let you know how to do and when to install it.

Now i want to know the performance of the system, how is it? is it improved? If not, we have to to do some more. If you think it's normal as it was, then no problem. I'll let you install the antivirus. I hope you understand what antivirus means and how much cpu and ram it eats up. So for your system, I would never recommend Norton which is one of the strongest and in the mean time consuming almost all the cpu and ram capacity. This means, your system will freeze frequently and will take forever to do anything and to run any program.

If your system is running normally, then let's install the antivirus.

    Awaiting.

    Hi--

We're getting there! It only took 5 minutes to connect to the Internet this time. My computer is still freezing up a bit though--if I wait too long to do something. For instance, I opened your email and read your comment, hit the reply button and then was distracted for a few minutes. Even as I'm typing this, there is hesitation. The words are typed several seconds before they show up in print.

  • Lebanon Raingam
    Lebanon Raingam Aug 04, 2010

Good to hear that it's improving, now you can start downloading the antivirus here's the link (click here), Open the link, click the link "softpedia secure download (u.s)..." and save the download. It may take sometimes depends on the speed of your net connection. After it's completed, install it.

While it's downloading, please check the free space available in C: drive (open My Computer, right-click C: and select properties and let me know how much free space is available) minimum 1.5Gb should be available otherwise there'll be problem running programs.

Again right click the "My Computer" on the desktop, select "properties" >"advanced" > and click on the first "settings" button > "Advanced" and check the virtual memory "Total paging file size of all drives:", Let me know the details, or you can simple take a screenshot and upload here..

I would like to know whether you've upgraded your ram or not. You can add additional rams on the slot available on the motherboard. Ram is one of the main component which regulates the speed of the computer. The more ram you have, the faster the system is.

    Good luck

  • ccmdk4 Aug 04, 2010

    Hi--

Download complete. Free space info==16.2 GB Total paging file==617. mb.

How do I add more ram?
    Thanks again.

  • Lebanon Raingam
    Lebanon Raingam Aug 04, 2010

Well, good to hear that. Adding ram means buying a new ram and install it on the available slot on the motherboard. Can you tell me how many Rams installed on your system? If you can tell me the motherboard type and complete details about it, i can help you find your ram. I would recommend 1gb ram for best performance and most mother supports upto 1gb. If you know any local Computer parts dealers, you can simply remove your ram (the computer should be turned off while doing this), take it to the dealer's store and ask them to give you the same ram with larger memory size (1Gb). I hope you know how to install and remove the Ram from the Motherboard. Simply, open the cabinet (case), look at the ram and push the locks on both the ends, it'll automatically come out. To install, push both the locks outside and align the Notch on the Ram to the Slot, and then plug in from the middle.

Since you are going to open the case, i would also suggest you to clean all the components, if you are not able to do it one by one or if you are afraid of doing that, just blow with a blower to that dusts on the motherboard and other components will be cleared. That's another very helpful tip.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

Thank you very much for your help. I think I added more Ram once before, so I should be okay with adding more. Thank you again. Appreciate your help.

I forgot to tell you one more thing. Have you activated the antivirus? (Avira antivirus), I hope it's been done since it's a part of the installation process. By default, after it is installed, it will automatically update everyday, your system is safe and no need to worry about viruses and worms. It'll automatically reject if it detects any or will prompt you with a warning message to accept or deny or etc.. etc.. (if it's not registered, you'll not be able to update the database daily).

It'll be my pleasure if you can rate me and post a testimony. Once again Thanks for using FixYa.

  • ccmdk4 Aug 10, 2010

    Hello again--

My computer is slower than ever. Please tell me how I can get my Norton ant-virus program back. It has taken me 40 MINUTES to be able to get a connection to the internet and finally get to my emails. INSANE!!! My computer is also freezing up at about every 6 words. This is totally unacceptable. Thank you.

Would you mind if I tell you to format your system? It may take time, but it's the best solution. To do this, you'll need A Windows XP Cd, Driver's Cd that came with the Motherboard (or pc). And most important of all, you'll need to know how to format the system.

Your problem couldn't be fixed easily, so the best I can recommend is Formatting, and remember, you'll loose everything means all the files saved on your C drive including My Documents' and Desktop's, so if you are ready, you need to back-up or need to Move them to another Partition.

During this, your computer will not be able do anything except follow whatever you command it to do using the XP Cd. But after it's done, you'll be able to use it again as it was when you purchased.

Even a motherboard with clogged dust can cause this problem, when all the chips, ic's, capacitors' etc.. etc.. on the motherboard are blocked, the speed will dropped and there will also be over-heating problem.

Old hard disk usually does this. When a hard disk is more than 5 years (or sometimes after few months or years, sometimes after 6 -7 years), it'll start responding slower as usual, means it's going to die very soon.

To format the pc, you need someone online (means you'll need another pc to chat with me or to contact me), or you need a hardware engineer do it for you.

Your Norton will not fix this problem. If you mean that the problem (slowness) is only with when opening the net or browser, could be another reason. In most cases, Internet Explorer does this.

    Let me know.

Slow internet

Slow internet connections happen for various reasons, even when you pay for a 'high speed connection'like DSL or cable.Because the internet (and World Wide Web) is built on hundreds of different technologies trying to talk to each other, there are many places where data can slow down before its reaches your computer screen. Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) might be at fault, certainly, but there are many other factors to look at before assigning blame. Some of these slow points are within your control, and can be quickly fixed with a little do-it-yourself effort:-

- Refresh your internet connection
- Shutdown your router for minimum 10 minutes so that your back end IP can be change by service provider
- Remove your Temporary files from your system
- Try to use Reginout for constantly refreshing internet connections

Computer buffering

Most likely is your Internet connection.

Could you post more details?

Just from the description, your Internet connection to YouTube servers may be slow, which can be a) your actual Internet connection speed or b) YouTube servers, which COULD be bogged down by activity (slightly unlikely, but it could happen).

The problem will go away either on its own or if you get a faster Internet speed service. You are most definitely going to experience this if you are trying to access content using dial-up, but you may also experience this with higher speeds and trying to access HD content (which is much more data to receive).

MY COMPUTER IS SO SO SLOW IT TAKES FOREVER TO DO ANYTHING WHY IS THIS? IM NOT EXAGERATING IT TAKES FOREVER TO DO ANYTHING

Delete any start-up programs you don't want or use, this will help make it faster at boot-up. Go to Start Button > Programs > Start Up then delete unused programs.

You can also run disk defragmenter. Which will speed up the process of looking up files, making your computer faster. To access Start Button > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

There are other ways to make your computer faster like running anti-virus, spyware/adware programs, registry cleaners, and even re-installing Windows. If you still have problems take it to local computer service shop, not a "big box" store like a geek squad (they think everything is a virus).

I hope I helped your computer be faster. If you have questions please contact me on my profile. Good luck!

This usually happens when the router has timed out trying to grab an IP address from your modem.

I suggest unplugging your router and modem, waiting 1 minute, plugging in your modem, wait 1 minute, plug in your router, wait 1 minute, then try to connect again.

If this solution has helped you, please take the time to rate me.

Jessica sounds like you have a few possible problems. first when you start your computer goto my computer and right click on the hard drive icon. Goto properties then select check disk. After this is done. ( it may take a while depending on how many errors) then do the same thing go into my computer right click on the hard drive icon goto properties and select defrag. When you are in defrag first let it analyze your hard drive. If it says you need to defrag let it defrag your hard drive. Once all this is done then restart your computer. You should notice a big change in speed both in your post bios and in your windows startup. After your computer has stopped loading windows. Check to see how many icons you have in system tray. ( to many icons or programs running in system tray can cause your computer to slow dramatically) Delete or disable the icons you do not use in your system tray. Then log on the internet and go to your favorite search engine. Type in registry repair. And run the program ... this will fix any registry errors plus some of them have capability to remove junk files even clean out your temp internet. If you have any more problems feel free to contact me. I will talk you through it step by step if need be.
