Question about RTO Atwood Water Heater - 6 Gal LP

1 Answer

Burner fires but goes out after a few minutes.

Have an Atwood LP water heater. Pilot works fine and unit fires fine at startup but will not stay fired very long. If I drop the thermostat to the low setting it will fire again but not for long. I've cleaned and adjusted and when fired the flame burns strong and blue.

Are you 100% sure there is water in it, try opening the pressure relief valve slightly to verify tank is full. If it is full check that by-pass valves at rear of tank are in normal operation position. When you say won't run very long, how long would that be approx.?

I have a Jayco pop up with an Atwood water heater, serial # 37C14U-5. My problem is two-fold. The water heater pilot doesn't stay lit after initial run, and propane is leaking out of the vent on the...

Leaking propane is red flag #1 and fire hazard.
Immediately update your insurance and then turn off gas.
If pilot is not staying lit, then gas leak can be cause of pilot problem since pressure on the line is reduced.
Other causes include bad gas control valve, air in the gas line, bad thermocouple, burner parts need cleaning, or all the above.
After fixing leak, replace thermocouple, clean combustion chamber and burner parts, and bleed gas line to remove air.

Have an Atwood LP water heater. When I light the pilot light and hold it for 30 seconds or more it stays lit but the burner tube will not light except for at the air/fuel mixture slits at the thermostat...

Yes, a good place to start would be to run a burner brush through entire tube to make sure all spider webs are out, then blow through again. If that doesn't cure it, double check your position of burner tube in chamber. Sometimes if it's moved into chamber too far, it will tend to back-up flame in to tube. I've had some that I re-installed and was sure I put it back exactly where it was before, but had to pull burner tube back approx 1/8"-3/16" to get a proper flame. Make sure it's centered in chamber as well.

Installed new thermocoupler heater still will not stay lite

Make sure the pilot light is hitting the thermocoupler, even when burner kicks in. Sometimes a dirty pilot tube will cause a weak pilot and it wont continuely hit the thermocoupler. I use air to clean mine. Hope this helps.

it's the thermocoupler ( about $20 ) that is bad replace it. if that doesnt do it it is the box with the on/off/ pilot button ( about $175 ) I found a complete unit at www.americanrvcompany.com for $275 plus shipping ($300 total) and that is how i fixed the exact problem with mine.

After a few minutes of burner heating the water, gas shuts off.

A couple of things to check:

If possible, remove the pilot gas assembly and clean the gas jet and thermocouple - they can get carboned up and stop working properly. Make sure the pilot flame and deflector is aimed properly and making the thermocouple glow red hot. If the problem persists, you may want to replace the thermocouple and also check the propane regulator.
