Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

2 Answers

I have a 7 yr old Dell Dimension 2400 with a 17" Dell E171FPB flat panel monitor. Frequently, but not always, the monitor will flicker on/off every few seconds then go black for several minutes. It has always come back on after a while and might work great for several days at a time. Is the problem most likely the monitor or the computer? I do not have easy access to another monitor to change it out without buying a new monitor.

Find somebody with an old CRT-style monitor -- they are essentially WORTHLESS -- because they take up too much space, and not as nice a picture as an LCD, and offer to take it off their hands. Use it as a "test" monitor.

Or, it could be the video-card in your SEVEN-year-old computer.
Try replacing the video-card -- some friend probably has a "dusty" and "spare" video-card that can be temporarily used.

Check the power supply DC filter caps, burnt parts, cold solder joints, etc.
If you are going to DIY repair, please read below and look at my album of failed Dell monitors to get some ideas.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Colored vertical lines on monitor

Have you unplugged the power cord to the LCD? Let it sit for a minute, then try it. ALWAYS buy a UPS and plug any computer devices into it. Doesn't have to be big, a $50 unit will protect it from dangerous voltage surges.

Dell e171fpb lcd monitor

The driver tabs between the LCD panel and it's controller board have failed.
These are very fragile and not repairable for anything in the cost effective range.
Best option is to either find a new panel to replace it, or get a new monitor.
