Question about Panasonic DMR-EZ17 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Discs are not the problem. Have used brand new ones as well as used ones. Lights alternate between NO and READ. Manual says disc is dirty. Can't be.

No, the disks aren't dirty, the laser lens is. To properly clean the lens and the entire head you should dismantle the unit and directly access the head. There blow most of the dust away first using a fan then, especially on the laser head, using a can of compressed air. After that wipe everything in sight using a q-tip. Beware the lens is fragile , it can be easily scratched, use a good clean q-tip on it and rub it gently.

How do I dismantle? Are there instructions somewhere?

  • Azrael SRL Jul 30, 2010

    Here's the repair manual
    http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/8...
But all you need to do is to unscrew some screws and lift some covers - if some parts are glued or riveted leave them alone - the optical unit should be directly below the cover and to access the head all you need to do is to unscrew the upper support bar.

  • jcoward716 Jul 30, 2010

    didn't get instructions to dismantle.

  • Azrael SRL Jul 30, 2010

As i said all you need is a screwdriver - take the screws that hold the cover, take the cover off, take the screws that hold the upper bar, take the bar - that is all.

The problem is it says non recordable disc cant read those are the Panasonic discs that came with it how much is a new laser if i need one

I love these sorts of problems. The typical estimated cost to replace the laser (which may also contain the spindle motor in the same block - as one part) and labour including alignment, firmware, etc. is around $200 - $300 approximately at an authorised Panasonic service centre. You would need to take the unit to a repair centre for a quote on the relevant repairs/parts etc., involved. This way you can make a decision as to whether or not to go further.

However, if the discs you got with the recorder are meant to be recordable, and it can't record them, chances are the laser could just be dirty (factory dust if you bought it new or general dust if you got it secondhand) or it may need refocusing/aligning, or the discs are defective.

These are good units, but keep in mind the DMR-E55 is a 2004 model and does not feature a built in HDD or digital tuner - it is not unfixable though. The other thing you can do which is cheaper, as well as using a DVD lens cleaner disc, is to use a different brand of blank DVD-R/RWs - it might not like the discs you got with it. Have you tried different discs? have you tried to play a shop-bought DVD movie in it? if so, does it read the disc?

Try the lens cleaner disc and different blank DVDs first. If neither fixes the issue, consider the above option - take it to a workshop for analysis/quote.

Won't recognize the disc as a game... how do we fix this? Its a brand new Wii game.

Check the bottom of the Game Disc (the side without any labels or writing) for any dirt or damage (such as cracks, scratches, etc.).

If the games look significantly damaged, such as with scratches or cracks, it will need to be replaced.

If the game looks dirty (fingerprints, smudges), try cleaning the Game Discs. If the problem persists, the Game Discs will need to be replaced. or Click here to download repair guide

Getting disc read error

THere are a number of problems that can cause a disc read error. The lens can be damaged or very dirty. The motor that moves the les could be stuck or damaged. The disc could be dirty or scratched. Or the disc format might not be able to be read by the player. Do you try more than one disc? Are you trying different types of discs? like store boght discs and recordable discs. Some players wont read mp3 or cd-rw discs.

My playstation 2 slimline won't read disks what can i do to fix it without sending it back to sony

Hello Richard,
Sorry to hear you are having some problems with your game console, but hopefully we can get you back up and running. Game consoles have many of the same issues that any device with an optical reading assembly have and basically work on the same principles, such as dvd/cd players, dvd/cd roms, etc . The following are some common problems that can cause your device to not read the discs properly.

I am going to start with the most common ones and work my way out from there. The information can be used to help you in the future if you experience similar problems.

1. The game discs may be damaged or dirty- If any disc has scratches, pits, or are dirty (usually finger prints or dust) will cause the laser to not be able to read the data on the disc. This is a very common problem among any device that uses optical reading assemblies with lasers to read data. This will usually present with the device not being able to read one or two discs, but being able to read other ones or brand new ones.
I suggest you purchase a disc cleaner so you can keep all of your discs (game discs, dvds, cds, computer software, etc) clean and help you remove any small scratches they have. This will keep all of your discs in good working order. The cleaner can be purchased at just about any store that sells electronics such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Circuit City, etc and they are not expensive at all. You can purchase the electric ones (they cost a bit more, but are faster and easier to use) or buy a manual one that you have to turn a knob to rotate the disc (these are cheaper, but I personally don't think they do as good of a job). Another idea is to contact your local gaming or movie store and ask if they can clean your discs (some will and some won't and if they do, may charge you a small fee if you have a lot of discs to clean).

2. The Optical Lens is dirty- This is another very common problem and can be fixed easily. If the optical lens is dirty it will not be able to read the disc data properly. Over time every device that has an optical lens will eventually get dirty. This problem will present in much the same way as a dirty disc, with the exception that it will usually not read any discs new or used. To help you solve this problem you can again purchase a cleaning kit from the same places I mentioned previously and they are also not expensive. You can also clean the optical lens manually in much the same way you can a dvd player (you can click on the link that will take you to my tips and tricks, which will give you step by step instructions on how to do this). I personally would suggest you purchase a cleaning kit. The following picture will give you an idea of what to look for:
563d964.jpg

3. The spindle motor has malfunctioned- If the disc is not spinning up at all when inserted in the device, the problem will be the spindle motor. If you listen closely you should be able to hear the disc spinning inside the game console. If you find that this is the problem and you have no formal training or experience working on electronics or do not feel comfortable replacing the part yourself, then you will need to take it to a qualified technician. The motor will usually run you on average around 23-40 dollars, but the labor on average will cost around 50-80 dollars depending on where you live. You can all around and do some comparison shopping to find the best deal.

4. The laser has malfunctioned- If the laser is not firing properly then the device will not be able to read the data from the disc. This is usually a bit more expensive to repair for the parts and labor. You can find more detailed information in the following link, which will have more pictures to give you a better idea of what the parts look like. Again, they will basically be the same as a dvd player.

Based on the information you described in your post, I believe that the optical lens needs to be cleaned. The additional information should help you troubleshoot your device and find the problem if cleaning does not immediately correct the issue. Sorry for the long post, but I like to provide as much information as possible to better help solve issues and save you time and money. I hope the information I posted helps solve your problem or helps solve any other issues you may have with your device in the future. If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact me. I will be more than happy to help in any way I can.

If you would not mind, please rate my help. I would greatly appreciate it.Thank You

When I had this problem it was a faulty DVD drive. However, seeing as you Xbox is brand new, don't bother messing with it and invalidating your warranty. Just take it back and get a new one.

I have an ilo dvd ro4 and when I put a disc in it says invalid disc

Laser is either dirty or starting to wear out.It may also not be a compatible disc, not all brands of discs work in this model. The unit records on R+Rw+ discs 4x speed or slower.Variable speed discs1x-16x will also work.
Most of the time it is just a dirty laser that can read the disc,to clean laser use a commercial laser cleaning disc,Phillips and Maxell work well in this model.Put a drop of rubbing alcohol on cleaning brushes.

Sony RDR-HX710

Check whether the discs you are using are compatible with the machine. I've just had the same problem using 8x DVD+R DL (Double Layer) discs, and after checking the users manual found that the machine only supports 2.4x DVD+R DL. I am now trying to find out if there is some sort of firmware upgrade available.
