Procedure for replacing pull cord on my mcCulloch M1255 CLS

The first thing you do is to reattach the pull cord to the pulley. If you are lucky both ends of the spring are where they belong. To test this turn the pulley in the the direction the pulley would turn when the starter cord is pulled and see if you can feel the spring winding up.If you can not you will need to pull out pully out and attach the the spring on one end to the pully and the other end to the case. After that you find a notch in the pulley. Place the cord in the notch and start winding the spring. The cord should not be winding up on the pully. Now take the cord out of the notch and let it wind up on the pulley. If the cord is not fully wound up you repeat the process till the rope is wound up all the way.

Replace Pull cord poulan p3500

Hook the cord into the small cut a way in the side of the pulley, now wind the pulley in a clockwse direction you should feel the the spring tention increasing, once there is adiquate tention unhook the rope from the pulley and allow the spring to wind the pulley back and pull the cord in, do not forget to replace the screw and plate that secures the pulley as it appears to be missing on your video.

Replace starter cord

Undo the screws holding the housing of the starter cord & remove the whole thing.
Before continuing it may be wise to take a picture of the pulley & how its held on so you can put it together correctly.
Inside you should see a removable clip attached to a moving nylon peg thing, remove this, then a washer, then remove the round plastic pulley that holds the cord.
Remove the old cord.
Thread one end of the new cord (ensure it's the same thickness) from the outside of the pulley through the hole so it comes out in the middle as it was before.
Tie a knot in it, trim off any eccess cord & pull it back through, tucking the knot neatly into the place where the knot goes.
Wrap the cord 3 or 4 times round the pulley & thread the loose end through the hole in the housing.
Put the pulley back in the housing as it came off & replace the washer, peg & clip.
Pull the cord to make sure it springs back ok.
***Now pull the chord right out & slowly let the spring pull it back in. Now thread your pull handle on right up to the housing, put a knot in it a bit further than this point so the spring holds the handle tight to the housing and its not dangling loose.DONT CUT THE ECCESS OFF YET
Ensure youre happy with the length of cord when its pulled out
If its too short, undo the knot, leave the pulley in place, use a thin screwdriver to pull the cord into the housing to wrap it round the pulley one more time (theres normally a notch cut out of the pulley to get the cord round between the pulley & housing)
Now repeat from ***
Now screw the housing back in place.
It's easier to do than write!!!!

How to put a new pull rope on it How do I put a new pull rope on

It realy depends on what model we are talking about, so i will give a general disciption, remove the four screws retaining the starter to the saw, remove the starter, if the cord is still under tention, pull the starter handle out approx 8", whilst held out hold the pulley to stop it retracting, let go the starter handle and unwind the now lose cord from around the pulley, once enough cord has been unwound let the pulley slowly turn until all the spring tention has gone, remove the center fixing screw, and remove the pulley, pull the old cord away, refit a new suitable diameter cord, knot the end and pull the cord into the pulley so as the knot sits flush into the hole in the pulley, wind the cord fully around the pulley, now refit the pulley to the cover, refit the centre screw ,push the other end of the cord through the cover eyelet and refit the starter handle with a suitable knot, now wind the cord around the pulley a further two times by turning the pulley and winding up the spring, allow the spring to pull the cord in, if required wind the pulley a further turn until the cord is suitably tentioned in the cover, replace the cover on the machine, pull the cord out to make sure it has engaged fully into the pawls before fully tightening the fixing screws.

How do I replace the pull start?

Remove the four screws securing the starter houseing, with the starter removed, pull the cord out, tuck the cord into the cut a way in the side of the pulley and allow the cord to wind in slowley to let the tention off the spring, make sure all the tention has gone, now remove the centre screw, take away the pulley centre and the round spring from behind, note the hole in the pulley and the centre hub for the spring location, now carefully remove the pulley, be aware there is a large spring behind, remove the knot in the end and remove the starter handle, fit the cord back into the new pulley, refit the pulley into the cover making sure to locate into the spring behind, thread the cord back through the cover and reconnect the handle, knot the cord, re fit the round spring back into the locating hole in the pulley, re fit the pulley hub making sure the spring fits into the hole in the hub, re fit the securing screw, now put the cord back into the cut a way in the side of the pulley, wind up the spring, allow it to pull the cord back into the starter, only wind it enough to pull the cord fully back into the cover, re fit the starter.

Pull cord broke on my lawn boy mower, new cord won't retract??

I don't know exactly what you have there, but starters in general work pretty much the same. What you have to do with any starter when you replace the rope is to first wind up the spring with the pulley. Turn the pulley in the direction it would be turning if you were pulling the rope. When it's wound tight, back off to align the rope hole in the cover and the pulley. Stick the rope from the outside through the cover and pulley and tie a knot. Then let the spring tension pull the rope into the starter. Hope that helps. Dwain
