Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 (M01E100) 100 GB Hard Drive
My 3100 has worked for about 2 years and the other day it stopped being read by WinXP. It usually had a constant fan whir and a barely perceptible buzz when the discs where being accessed, but now it clicks about every half a second and the orange "accessing" light never comes on. I recently changed the compression settings on the C drive to compress data to save disk space, could this have caused the external drive not to be read? I switched out the cable and it still does not work, even on another computer. Any other suggestions?
other info - Dell Inspiron 5150 (yep, aging quickly)
If the fan does not come on at start up try this replace all electrical leads that attach to your hard drive including IDE,SATA leads if still no work replace PSU
