Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Well hard drives are vacuum sealed and precision instrument's. If you drop them things move inside and then bye bye drive. I was lucky as the drive worked long enough to get the data onto another drive. Then it died. Well another lesson in life that cost money. LOL. At the end of the day it is best not to drop any electronic equipment especially when it has moving parts. DOH

Dropping a hard drive is never a good thing. They are very sensitive moving parts inside a hard drive and they don't take well to falls. It sounds to me like there was some damage when you dropped it and it may no longer work properly. The clicking is the hard drive trying to read the data and failing. You mentioned that it seemed to come back to life a couple of times...try and recover the data if you can, and contact Western Digital Tech support if you are still under warranty. Hope that helps!

In Dell Precision M70: 3+ years old Drive head clicks when booting but system does not read the drive. Time to replace? Easy data retrieval options? Thanks

Definitely time to replace. As for data retrieval, if you're very lucky it might work as a secondary hard drive, for a short time, but it's unlikely. If you try make sure you have the correct jumper setting on both hard drives.

There is an old trick to get drives in a similar condition working again, if only for a short period of time, but I've never managed to do it successfully myself. You hold the drive firmly and swing it down, kinda like you're using a hammer, it's meant to free up the bearings by getting the moving parts spinning.

I would recommend a Samsung Spinpoint f3, I have the 1.5TB version and it's the one of the best drives I've had for ages. I know the f4's are out now, they may be even better, but I have no knowledge of their performance etc.

Sounds like it has the "Click Of Death" if you have something on there that you really need it may be possible to run it for a short while after freezing it (wrapped in plastic film) if you're lucky. More than likely though it is destined for the bin.

I have dropped my mybook and when it starts up the lights just flash and the computer does not regonsie it

Hello,

If you are lucky the drive enclosure has failed due to the drop.

You can test this theory by taking it to a PC shop and having the technicians extract the hard drive inside it and place it in a new external enclosure.

If it works, count your blessings and buy the enclosure.

If this fails to work, then you will likely need the helps of a pro as the damage is internal to the drive. If this is the case, respond with your location (Country, State and City) and I will refer you to a nearby professional lab for further assistance.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

I want to free up space on my hard drive and move it to another

well you gotta ask yourself if you have an external hard drive or removeable hard drive which are basically the same thing... if so you can open my computer and then open in a separate window the removeable hard drive and drag and drop files that you want to save!

External hard drive stopped driving.

First things first .....check for power cable and data cable and make sure they are not tampered or damaged inside the casing now move to next step>>>
kindly remove all jumpers in HDD now go to
Control panel>Administrative tool>Computer management>Disk management
you can see the disk here and change settings accordingly like assigning path and drive letter if this does not work
then just see that is it recognized in device manager as unrecognized device then update driver for HDD even now if the problem persists
KIndly consult the manufacturer
please do not drop it on the floor.........

Thanks And Regards

Why does my acer pc hard drive show full and not use the other hard drive when it is

Computers are good at calculus, but dumb as a doorknob.
You should move data manually to the other drive, and keep in mind that a disk cleanup should be performed in a regular basis. Also, NEVER keep your important data in the same drive as the OS, specially if it is from Silicon Valley. If by any chance you have to format, without some hard to come by software, say bye bye gigabytes.

Harddrive repair

Hi Raku5,

i have had more success out of getting antoher Disk drive just like the one I was try to recover data from.  Then I changed the Electronic Circuit board.  Low and behold I got my Data recovered.  It was expensive, but so was losing my data.  I have dismantled some hard drive that died trying to do the same thing your thinking. You know what, I did not find anything wrong with anything inside those Hard drives.  Once I started changing the Electrinics board, my solution was found.
