Today core 2 duo systems are on the top!
also a good think to look for is atleast 2GB or more of ram memory. If the laptop has vista then 2GB is minimum I recommend.

what will you use the pc for? Il know how to guide you better ones I know that since gameing and working require difrent things, or you could wind up paying too much for something you have no use for.

My computer is running too slow.

The best way to speed up a slow running computer is to clean it for viruses. Also optimize your system, browser and registry using some reliable cleaner such as Reginout Cleaner.

> Turn on Windows Updates.

> Keep your device drivers updates.

Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. The 130Mbps is the connection speed to the router. Not to the Internet.

You will get a reported 130Mbps, But, you arent really getting 130Mbps. of connection speed, its false. Try to check the package of your internet connection and run a speed test on both computer using Speedtest.net to test the real speed of your internet connection.

If you have question please let me know. Thanks using Fixya.

What kind of mother boards can I use to replace my old one in my gateway E1800 . Also will i need to replace the CPU? (to get more speed)

Almost any AT style board will work in that case. Be sure the new board has the outputs located where they will align with the holes punched in the back of the case or you won't be able to attach your keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc. which will necessitate the purchase of a new case.

Yes, you will need to replace your CPU and your RAM. The CPU is the engine for your computer - bigger, faster processor = more speed. More RAM = more speed! It's like driving a Volkswagen Beetle on your local street (your old CPU and RAM) and a HumVee on the Interstate (newer CPU and RAM.) You will probably also have to replace the power supply to accommodate the increased horsepower requirements of the new parts.

Touchpad settings reset to default after computer shuts down

What model laptop do you have?

I know some laptops come with a Power Management utility which controls various profiles. If your computer is setup with a certain profile maybe this is what is causing your computer to change settings everytime you reboot.

You may also be able to change this setting in the BIOS. Check there for any trackpad settings.

Having a problen installing 1gb ram. unit is 1gb ddr2 dimm 533mhz. computer turns on, shows that it has updated the memory, but does not boot

Hi,

if the computer states that the memory has been recognised. but fails to boot. it may not be compatable memory for your CPU/Processor. Or system bus. check your previous memory stick, to ensure it,s the same running speed 533mhz. Failing this if your computer does not support this.
check the manufacturers website, to see further details:- Maximum supported memory/Speed et,c.
Systems bios date, and whether an update is available. your only other alternative is to install 2 x 512mb sticks of Ram.

Too slow with 2GB RAM,250GB HDD and legal windows Xp

Hi,

In basic terms your computer speed depends mainly on two factors:
1:System configuration
2:Software which are running in background.

Your configuration is fine so check for unwanted third party software running in background.

Steps to check it out:

Click on start
go to run
type "msconfig"
go to "startup" which is on the TOP right corner.
The list which you see here are the third party softwares which start themselves automatically when your computer boots up.
Uncheck those ones you don't need to use all the time.(Even if you uncheck all of them, It won't harm your computer)
Then click on apply then close.
restart your computer
It will give you a message >> Check on don't show this message again and then click on "OK."

You will feel your computer running better.

NOTE: some softwares like NORTON, trend micro, Mcafee. These
can also make your computer slow and we can not disable them completely from above mentioned steps. We need to disable there services as well or remove them completely.
