Our shallow well pump, I believe, has lost it's prime.

Do I have to buy another one or is there a way to prime it?

CANNOT GET NEW PUMP TO PRIME,OLD PUMP WAS WORKING FINE JUST LEAKING AROUND MOTOR/PUMP HOUSING,BEST WAY TO PRIME NEW PUMP IS MY QUESTION

A shallow well pump needs to be primed. On the bottom of the well above the sandpoint there should be a foot valve (check valve) installed.

On the top of the pump there is a fill cap. Fill the pump until it is filled to the top. I

Replace the fill cap and start the pump. If there is air remaining in the well attempt a second time.

If the pump can not be filled it would indicate that the check valve is not working\ or the water level in the well is low.

I have a Mastercraft1/2 HP self priming Shallow well jet water pump, the water fell below the intake in my well and I quickly noticed and turned off the pump. We had water delivered and I'm not su

If water is back up above the intake, it should prime itself in a few minutes. As long as you don't let the case get hot to the touch it should be okay to run dry.

If it fails to prime and pump up pressure, you may have to prime it.

Pump does not pump anything. motor is running and getting hot, no water being pumped. i have to prime this stupid thing?

If you are trying to draw water from a lower place, you may have lost prime. It is also possible there is a reason for this loss of prime, maybe a leak on the suction piping. Remove some fitting on or near the discharge of the pump, fill the body completely with water. If it goes in, fill the entire suction piping with water, too. Open a faucet nearby, turn on the pump and wait up to 5 minutes. It should spit and sputter, sound will change, some water will discharge, but eventually, you should get steady flow.
If you lose prime again, look for leaks in the suction piping from the inlet of the pump to where the piping goes into the ground.

1/2 hp shall well pump. set at 30/50....seems to hesitate around 48 for an extra amount of time....have to shake the hose or tap the pressure plate to get pump to cycle off. also....noticed the pump...

50 PSI for a 1/2 HP pump is approaching the upper limit for that pump. Many things can affect the upper limit. How far the pump has to pull water up the well pipe, is there any air leak what so ever on the input. If the pump lost its prime because it could not attain the 50PSI, I would suspect it may be just outside the limits of the pump at this point in time. If this pump is on a shallow well, it may be that the shallow well point is beginning to plug and not allowing as much water in which would cause a harder pull for the pump. I would turn the high pressure side down to maybe 45 and see if it operates properly at that pressure.

I hope this helps.

My Stay Rite Pump 1 hp, 230 volt model DS3HE - 01 runs, but does not operate my irrigation system with any pressure. I resume the pump has lost its prime, but have no clue as to what I might do to fix it?

pumps lose prime for a few reasons...bad foot/check valve, crack in the suction line are probably the two most common.. see if there is a threaded fitting( most pros put one on the pipe some where) on the top feed of the pump. open it up and add water til the pump fills up. if the pump is outside turn the pump on before resealing the fitting, otherwise resael the fitting and open a spicket outside. depending on your water table it could take some time to prime but in normal circumstances up to 20 minsif it does not prime you may want to consider hiring a pro!!

Jet pump does not pump water

I had a similar problem and as a last resort took the pump apart and cleaned it and the jet. It's a very old pump but works ok now.
