Question about Husqvarna 23HP VTwin Hydrostatic 48" Cut Riding Mower

2 Answers

Blown engine My mower was purchased on 6/22/2009 Took mower to an authorized repair shop for spring service and to fix a minor issue. 6 weeks later the engine blew. It obviously was low on oil. The oil was replaced on previous service. Air filter also was replaced. I mowed 2 yards twice each and the outfield of the churches baseball field twice. The Briggs rep. is saying that it was caused by a very dirty air filter. This caused the engine to burn oil when the dirt got into the carb. Enough oil to blow an engine in only 6 uses? Is this possible? I have a protection plan from Lowes. The Mower is still under the 2 year warranty. The briggs rep is refusing to pay for the repairs.

A dirty air filter will reduce the power produced by the engine, and eventually may make an engine stall, but it does not cause it to "burn oil". You have options, so just work your way through them: 1) manager/owner of the repair shop - will they stand behind their repair work? 2) the warranty and protection plan from Lowes. Go in with the right attitude - don't direct anger at the person you're talking to, just describe your issue and ask them what they would do in your situation? If you get turned down, politely ask to escalate the issue to their supervisor, etc. Good luck to you.

There is a CRANKCASE breather that filters through the air cleaner as well. Dirty air filter causes either excess vacuum or pressure in the crankcase causing oil to be pushed out and into the combustion chamber. There is only 48 ounces of oil in there and if it gets to low the critical parts will get starved of oil causing the engine to seize. It is your responsibility to check the oil and air filter before running the engine and if you fail to do the recommended maintenance then it is your engine and no warranty or service plan will cover it. Sorry . . .

1988 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 will not move when put into gear

Hi, Anonymous if you take your bike to a reputable independent shop for a specific issue that costs outrageous amounts of money and weeks of not being able to ride only to have the same problem 2 days later your situation is not unique unfortunately and it is a double edged sword. First, you suffer the emotional stress and frustration of spending all your hard earned "Drachma" and your bike does not get fixed. Second, comes the realization that not only are the technicians incompetent but also the service manager for not doing anything about it, this isn't rocket science, it's a glorified lawn mower engine with extra cylinders and carburetors sometimes. Shops know that if they keep your bike a long time and there is an issue a few days later some customers are reluctant to go back to that shop because they don't want their bike tied up for another 3 or 4 weeks. You need to put an end to all the double talk, dancing around the issue, and a "we don't care attitude", but how you ask, very simple you exercise the "nuclear option" go back to the shop and ask to speak to the owner or general manager if the owner is not there, then with a straight face and polite voice you ask him/her if they can provide you with the name and contact phone number of the owner or your brand motorcycle headquarters in your country that can recommend a repair facility that will fix your bike because your local shop either can not or will not. I guarantee you that is all the grease you need to get someone to light a fire under the proper persons rear end to resolve your issue "toot sweet" Please email me a copy of your original work order so I can use it for ammunition, I live for situations like this.

1996 vulcan 800 will not shift out of second (no 3rd, 4th, or higher gears)

Hi, James you have 2 options: bite the bullet and do some major transmission surgery or call your local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

I have a kawasaki 21 hp on a 2008 toro O turn mower.Last fall as I was mowing the mower suddenly stopped and would not restart. Later I realized the engine filled with gas. I then took it to the dealer...

Find a different dealer...The problem doesn't have a "101" type of solution. Being able to fix the problem requires knowing what you're looking at and recognizing what's out of adjustment. There isn't a "base line" to start at. A few shop tools are needed. Especially a tachometer. A rack type assembly under the carburetor, where the cables attach, can be moved as a whole unit to adjust how the springs effect the governor, which in turn, changes how the governor controls the carburetor. Yours is set too low, with too much tension, and the springs are too tight.

Pull string won;t recoil

The recoil spring has broken. These are available at any lawn mower parts supply store. The process of changing the spring is tedious but can be done by anyone with average mechanical ability. If you removed the recoil assy (and air shroud if it is riveted on) and took the assembly to a Lawn Mower Repair shop usually they will change out the spring while you wait. If you can't get the recoil assy off take the mower with you to the repair shop. Again most shops will fix it while you if wait but if they are very busy usually they are serviced within 24 hours.

If you do attempt this yourself check in the tips section of FixYa on how to change the recoil stater rope after replacement of the spring.

I highly recommend you replace the pull rope at the time of the recoil spring replacement.

One final note... there is a possibility that the pull rope spool has been damaged where the spring attaches.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Kelly

Mower carb keeps flooding fills crankcase with gas I have taken it to authorized repair shop 4 times at $ 40.00 a pop this mower is still under warrenty there is no good ph# to call and complain

You will need to take it to a shop that does warranty work on the engine. The mower part is a separate unit for a warranty claim. Plus you should have not had to pay anything to the shop you took it to for the warranty work. Find another shop to do your repair work. If they take a little longer to work on it, it may mean they are a better shop than one that can turn it ariound in a day for you.

I posted same problem as this couple days ago. Took mower to shop. The governor spring (located just under the air filter) had come off. So glad it was something so minor!
