Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

I have a GE microwave that is barely a year old. Recently, my husband was heating up some melting chocolate and white sparks started flying within the microwave. When we opened it, all we saw was that some of the inside coating paint had chipped off. Is there a way to eliminate the white sparks? Do you think it is the chipped coating that caused it? I do not want to have to buy a new microwave if I can help it. Thanks!

Very difficult to explain briefly as microwaves are truly complex.
You will almost certainly have 2 problems. 1)You need to carefully sandpaper the area where the paint is peeling off and "only paint with appliance paint as this does not have lead in it and 2)The sparks are due to a variety of things, but the most obvious, replace your main capacitor and HV diode. This combination is the normal culprit for arching. If it continues after that, the Magnatron needs replacement as well (Unfortunately, for first time diagnosis, electrical testing equiptment is needed.)

Sparks Flying

Microwave ovens are covered with a special durable paint and that helps reduce sparking. The problem is the area that you are seeing this at has become dirty with food debris. You need to clean it very well and if the paint has come off, repaint it with special paint. The paint can be found on amazon dot com and the cleaning has to be done without getting any moisture in the wave guide (which is behind the thing you called the vent.)

Sparks ae flying in my microwave

GE in essence says it is unrepareable and insafe. I suggest that would be saying it is trash.I don't know what that carboard is, possibly indulation? Ot may have /be a a oiece oce of laminated metal like some paper plates have..Not replaceable is a poor answer. Call them back and make a fuss. If it's not too far over warranty, they may work with you to shut you up.. oops, sorry, to pacify you.
:-) Good luck.
