Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

For business purposes I connect to a server in another city and work and print remotely. Usually I see my computer drives listed as part of hte compouter configuation on the server, so, for example I see my C drive etc, listed as if it was a drive on the server. In a similar way I usually see my printer. I see my printer listed in the array of printers but i cannot select it as a red x error says that the printer does not exist on the server. what must i do to restore the connection.

This could happen when the drivers of the printer was recently updated from the server machine. First try to add a new Printer and search with the "Add New Printer" wizard (if you can only access the server with full control, otherwise you'll not be authorized to do this).

If the server is maintained by someone else from the Server Location, you better contact them, It's not a big deal since you are directly accessing, if you have the administrator's rights, you can do it, but if you don't have it, the only option is the Server Admin who can fully access it and change or modify any settings including the printer's driver or any hardware or software.

If you can fully access the server and you are having problem adding or reinstalling the printer, do let me know so that I can assist you further.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Well, I need more info about your problem, is the printer connected to your Pc or to the server? I am confused. Are you accessing your system remotely or are you accessing the server remotely from your pc? Let me know the printer's model and make and the connection type (network or sharing or usb, etc..) What is the Os of your server? and what is your pc's Os? I am sorry for asking you these much question, but I need to know so that I can help you better. Hope you don't mind.

From the first sentence of your first post, it seems you are accessing the server from your pc, but when I go down, it seems you are accessing your pc from the server and making print-outs on your remotely connected pc.

    Thanks.

This is a tougher one! Sometimes when you open the software too fast before thedatabase starts up, you get this. Make sure the SQL Server services are running in Windows before opening RPE

Lost connectivity after power outage

If this is a printer WITHOUT WiFi or bluetooth - and you have it connected to another computer (Print Server) via a USB cable - you need to make sure you can see that computer from the other computer you are printing from. Use the network explorer - if you can see the computer and the printer you should be able to print to it.

Sometimes, it may be secured with a password. I found if I can map a shared drive from my laptop to my print server then I can print again. So see if you can see the printer and printer server computer from the other computer. If so you may need to add that printer again to you printer list.

Print server Iogear GPSU21 + HP Deskjet F4180 do not print!

The print server is Vista compatible. However, the Deskjet F4180 is not listed as a supported printer.Look at this list: http://iogear.com/files/pdf/GPSU21_Printer_Compatiblity_List_4-20-09.pdf . This print server is not the right one for your printer. You can either try a different print server, a supported printer or directly connect the printer to a computer and make that computer a print server for the rest of your network. The last option will take a bit more work. In Windows, the directly connected computer will need to allow sharing for the printer and the firewall software will need to trust the other machines in the network connect to it. The other computers will only be able to print and not use the other multi-function features. You may need to get additional software drivers to make this work (particularly if one computer uses a 64-bit OS and another has a 32-bit OS).

I hope this helps.

Netgear ps121 won't print

Possible reason why you cannot print with the print server is because the computer is not getting a valid IP from the router or a firewall is installed in the computer. You have to disable all firewalls installed in the computer.

For the print server setup, please follow the steps below:

Note: Before setting up the print server, make sure that you can print when printer is connected directly to the computer.

1. Wire the print server to router. Check the lights on it. It should have the ACT light on and the Error light off.

2. One way to test if the printer would work with the print server is to reset the print server for 3 to 5 seconds while it is powered on and after you release the button, the printer should automatically print the IP address of the print server.

Note: If the printer did not print, there is a possibility that they are not compatible. However, you may still continue to try to set up the print server.

3. Install the PS121 software.

a. Power on your computer, let the operating system boot up completely, and log in as needed.
b. Insert the Resource CD for the PS121 into your CD-ROM drive. The CD main page shown at the right will load.
c. Click Install Software.
d. Click Next and follow the software installation utility prompts to complete the software installation.
e. When prompted, restart your computer to complete the installation.
f. When your computer restarts, click Finish to run the Print Server Setup Wizard.

4. Run the Print Server Setup Wizard to Set Up a Fixed IP Address for the PS121.

a. The Print Server Setup Wizard screen should be displayed.
b. Click Next to proceed. The Print Server Wizard will now search your network for the PS121. If the Print Server Setup Wizard cannot find your PS121, check the network connections and status lights on the PS121.
c. The “Server Name” and the “IP Address” your network assigned to the PS121 are displayed. Click Next to proceed to the device name screen.
d. You can enter a descriptive Device Name and Domain Name or accept the defaults. Click Next to proceed to the IP Address configuration screen. The Print Server Wizard displays a recommended static IP address setting for the PS121. This is usually fine.
e. Click Next to proceed.
f. Click Finish to exit the Print Server Setup Wizard. This completes the configuration of the PS121 for operation on your network.
g. Click Yes to run the Add Printer Port Wizard. Follow the instructions in the next section for using the this wizard to set up each computer to use the PS121.

To set up each computer to use the PS121, please follow the instructions below:

1. Use the NETGEAR Add Printer Wizard to set up each PC to use the PS121.
a. When the Print Server Setup Wizard finishes, you are prompted to run the Add Printer Port Wizard. Click Yes to proceed. Alternatively, from the Windows Start menu NETGEAR Print Server program group, you can run the NETGEAR Add Printer Wizard.
b. After a short delay while the software searches the network for your PS121, the Printer Select window opens and displays the PS121 you have set up.
c. Click Next to proceed to the Port/Printer name screen. Take note of the printer model number listed.

2. Set up the correct printer driver for the printer port.
a. Click Next to proceed to the Port/Printer name screen. Take note of the printer model number listed.
b. Click Next to proceed to the Select Printer screen. If you see the exact printer model number listed as the printer model number from in the previous screen, click it to select it from the list.
c. If prompted, print a test page to verify operation of the printer and the PS121. Then, close any remaining Add Printer Port Wizard or Windows Add Printer Wizard windows.

Use the NETGEAR PS121 Mini Print Server Resource CD to run the Add Printer Port Wizard to set up each PC on you network that you want to use with the PS121. Select the port you added

However, if this does not resolve the issue we will need to get some additional details from you to be able to assist you further. I have summarized my questions below:

1. Model number of router
2. Model of printer
3. Operating system of computer/s

Upgrade failure

The software that came with the WPS54G model is not (yet)compatible with Vista systems. This model is not listed on the Vista-ready devices from Linksys' website (www.linksys.com/vista). The behavior more likely a result of a software incompatibility.

For PrintServer network setup, you may still use the CD on a non-Vista system (XP, Win2000 or lower). Or, by installing it manually by accessing it's web interface.

To make your Vista working with the printserver WITHOUT the use of the PrintServer CD, do the ff:
1. Make sure PrintServer is configured on the network with the same wireless settings of your router and with a manually assigned IP address which is in range of the router's IP segment.
2. Make sure that computer can print locally to the printer (e.g. via USB connection to the printer).
3. When computer can surf the net and connected to the router's network (wired or wireless), follow the steps from this article and make sure Printer is showing up as Online.

Goodluck!
