Question about Linksys WRT120N Router

2 Answers

I have a linksys WRT120 connected to my home network. I have one computer "wired" directly to the router and one wirelessly connected with WPA2 security. Last week i was having connection issues with the wireless connectivity, i disconnected and reconnected to the network multiple times. Each time i was given a the message that the connection had been cancelled. I then noticed another SSID (generic "linksys" Name) that was not secured under the , so i connected to it so i could go online to try and troubleshoot. I then unplugged my router ( thinking maybe it needed sometime to rest) and lost my internet connection. So my router disbanded its self from my network and created its own i guess??? So today I'm trying to fix it but i'm still having issues as i can't connect at all wirelessly now. I changed my SSID from the default and setup wpa2 security and am online on my wired computer, but my wireless computer will not even acknowledge that the network exists. I don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated.

I'd suggest that you reset the Router to its default factory settings. After doing so, when opening a browser, you should be prompted to initiate the setup wizard. Once set up I recommend checking for any recent firmware updates.

On the WRT120 the Reset button is located on the
right side of the product label. There are two
ways to reset the Router to its factory defaults.
a) Either press and hold the Reset button for
approximately five seconds.
b) Log into your router and restore the
defaults from the (Administration > Factory
Defaults) screen of the Router’s browser‑based
utility.

Check out the Linksys Support Page for your router.

I hope this helps!
Good luck and Please rate :)

The wired connection does not use or need the SSID and/or WPA2 settings.
The SSID and WPA2 encryption is the Linksys router's wireless settings. The wireless card in the computer need to be configured with the router's wireless settings, (ie SSID and WPA2) so it can connect to (communicate with) the wireless router.

How can I get the router IP of my Linksys 2.4GHz broadband router?

The Linksys G router gives you both wired and wireless connections over a broadband Internet connect to create a local area network. The Linksys router is compatible with wireless G and B devices, through the 2.4-GHz wireless band. The wireless speed is at 54 megabytes per second and you can get 100 megabytes per second with a wired connection. You have to set up the wireless configuration on the Linksys before using it on your network.

Plug the router's power cable into an electrical outlet. Attach an Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back of the router. Connect the other end into your broadband modem. Connect your computer to the Linksys G using another Ethernet cable. This Ethernet cable can go into any of the wired router ports. Open your Internet browser. Type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar and hit "Enter." This is your router's IP address and the home of its Web configuration page. Click "Wireless." Click "Manual." Alter your SSID, also known as your network name. You can change this name to any value that you want. You can also change the wireless channel if you are in an area with many wireless connections that may interfere. Click "Save Changes." Click "Wireless Security." Choose an encryption method to encrypt your wireless transmissions. WPA or WPA2 are common security protocols you can use in wireless networks. Input a network key, also known as the network password. Click "Save Changes."

I have an N900 router that I want to secure from outside the home use

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

What is the wep password

The encryption key secures your data from unauthorized access.
The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

What is a WEP key for a Linksys WRT400N wireless router?

The WEP encryption key (network key) is in your wireless router, without this key the wireless router won't allow the computer or laptop to connect to this wireless router.
I recommend you use WPA or WPA2 encryption, it is much stronger than WEP.
The WEP, WPA, WPA2 encryption key is in your router's wireless settings. Log into your router and got to the wireless settings, you will need to get the SSID and the encryption key. Then go to your computer or laptop's wireless card and configure it with the router's SSID and encryption key, so it will then connect to the wireless router and the Internet.

I'm having a problem setting up my linksys wireless router. My computer sees the connection but will not connect to it? I've tried the repair option and tried to add a network with out any luck.

As i remember Linksys goes with Straight Through Ethernet cable. Always, good thing is to connect your computer to Wireless Router using LAN port. Set DHCP (Automatic) connection for your computer. After receiving ip from router you can setup your Wireless Router using GUI, and setup your Wireless Network, SSID/Security. From adapter to adapter there can be some misc problem with WEP/WPA/WPA2 and so on, so it maybe your issue, or OS blocking connection to Wireless Networks without security.

Secure network

Normal 0 You should use the strongest form of encryption that all of your wireless devices can support. If they can all do WPA2, then use WPA2. Otherwise you can use WPA.
With WPA or WPA2 you should also use a strong key (sometimes called password or passphrase).

To set up wireless security, you must use a computer that is wired to the router.

Where to find the router settings: The other settings are all found in the "Wireless" or the "Security" section of the router's setup pages, located at 192.168.1.1

First, give your router a unique SSID. Don't use "linksys".
Make sure "SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".

Next, leave the router at its default settings (except for the unique SSID), and then use your pc to connect wirelessly to the router. Test your wireless Internet connection and make sure it is working correctly. You must have a properly working wireless connection before setting up wireless security.

To implement wireless security, you need to do one step at a time, then verify that you can still connect your wireless computer to the router.

Next, encrypt your wireless system using the highest level of encryption that all of your wireless devices will support. Common encryption methods are:

WEP - poor (see note below)
WPA (sometimes called PSK, or WPA with TKIP) - good
WPA2 (sometimes called PSK2, or WPA with AES) - best

WPA and WPA2 sometimes come in versions of "personal" and "enterprise". Most home users should use "personal". Also, if you have a choice between AES and TKIP, and your wireless equipment is capable of both, choose AES. With any encryption method, you will need to supply a key (sometimes called a "password").

The wireless devices (computers, printers, etc.) that you have will need to be set up with the SSID, encryption method, and key that matches what you entered in the router.

Retest your system and verify that your wireless Internet connection is still working correctly.

And don't forget to give your router a new login and password.

**Picking Passwords (keys): You should never use a dictionary word as a password. If you use a dictionary word as a password, even WPA2 can be cracked in a few minutes. When you pick your login password and encryption key (or password or passphrase) you should use a random combination of capital letters, small letters, and numbers, but no spaces. A login password should be 12 characters or more. WPA and WPA2 passwords should be at least 24 characters. Note: Your key, password, must not have any spaces in it.

Most home users should have their routers set so that "remote management" of the router is disabled. If you must have this option enabled, then your login password must be increased to a minimum of 24 random characters.

One additional issue is that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledgebase, article ID=917021 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.

Note:
WEP is no longer recommended. The FBI has demonstrated that WEP can be cracked in just a few minutes using software tools that are readily available over the Internet.
