Hi, that sounds like the integerated video graphics is going bad and it's not actually the screen. the zd7000's were known for video graphics failure. there was a lawsuit filed against hp for the zd models about a year ago to get a free motherboard replacement because of the video issue but it's too late to send it in now for the free repair. the zd models don't have a replacable video card in them like most laptops which the only way to fix the problem ould be to purchase another motherboard, you could try ebay but they're not that cheap. Before you invest any further, try the lcd inverter http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/01/31/replace-screen-inverter-fix-backlight/ I have seen them for real cheap. If you take off your bezel cover underneath the display you'll find the inverter or if necessary you can get a tech to help install. Usually theres a series of beeps when you get a blank screen. Hp pavilion laptops also get hot on the keyboard after a while from long term use and zd 8000 came out about 4 years ago so the display should be a pretty good looking glossy screen. Those are nice laptops to work with by the way.
This is a vertical-deflection problem. Try to adjust the vertical (height and linearity and hold) controls, which should be screwdriver potentiometer controls on the back of the set.
If this does not work, a defective component in the vertical-deflection circuit will need to be repaired.
