A friend gave me a Sony Vaio PCG-9H4L. When I try to boot it up, it says ''Cannot find hard drive. Confirm if hard drive is correctly connected.'' I have the original system recovery cd, but not having any luck. Any suggestions on how to get this laptop running? FYI: My computer skills are rusty... :)

Re: Sony Vaio PCG-9H4L cannot find hard drive
You can try to go to bios pae and check if the system can detect the hard drive. If not you might need to call call Sony to check if the system is still on warranty so that they can replace the hard drive free of cost if not you might need to replace it with a new one

I'd say it's time to do a close inspection of the hard drive connector/adapter, especially if it has any components mounted on it. If you can't see a problem you can fix like a short between two terminals, and you can't get another one, get an external USB drive (preferably the largest flash memory stick you can obtain) and set it up as a Linux bootable volume and use that to run your computer. You will probably have to set the BIOS to boot from a USB volume first.
you shouldn't need to have to press f9 to boot from cd rom if you have it set in the bios as the first boot device , are you sure the copy of windows on cd that you have is bootable. Try booting from the disc on another laptop or pc and see if you can start it
Its possible that you already have a bad hard drive. It may have crashed. Your system will not boot without the hard drive running. The computer will keep on trying to look for the Hard drive that's probably why it looks like its doing nothing. Bring your machine to sony and have them fix it. If you know how to open up your Vaio, try to check the Hard drive connection and see it its loose, if its not loose. its time to replace the hard drive.
++++++++++++++ ================= Regarding the Hidden partition You can
reformat the Vaio back to it's original state by going to All Programs
-> Vaio Recovery Tool -> Vaio Recovery Utility and choosing either Recover Drive C:\ only or to recover the whole computer back to
Most likely a hard drive problem but could be a number of things. Try pressing tab or escape when it freezes and see if the screen switches and gives more information.
If you are able, remove the hard drive and try booting again. (the cd/dvd drive could also cause this so try removing that if possible)
Try to power off unit and remove the battery. Then press and hold power button
for 30seconds.Put the battery back and turn it on. If it turns on turn it back
off again and remove the battery. Connect your VAIO using the AC adapter only.
If this will not resolve your issue you can check this with SONY or any
certified service center.
