Optiarc DVD RW AD-7201S5 drive does not read lightscribe discs

I own a HP a6642p Pavilion computer with an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7201S5 drive. I have been burning "normal" CD-RW's for quite some time, with no problems at all. Now I am actually trying to burn to a Memorex lightscribe CD-R and it will not recognize the disc. In fact, it will ask my to Format and name the disc, then I type in the new name, click format, and then it pops up with a "CD is write protected" message. At first I thought it was just a bad CD, but I then placed the same disks in another computer and had no problem burning or reading the disks. (It should be noted that my computer will not read the disks that were written by the other computer.)

SOURCE: problem copying a movie onto a lightscribe hp dvd +r media disc, using my hp dvd940e dvd writer

The semaphore timeout period has expired refers to the fact that the driver is no longer communicating with the device and failed. Each time a CD Burner is setup for a CD Burning session the burner hardware will perform a 15 step power test to determine the OPC for a Blank Media Disc, OPC meaning Optimum Power Calibration. This test also takes place during the CD Burning process so the CD Burner can determine the best burn speed and method for the disc; this test is called 'Running Optimum Power Calibration'. Although the test is performed by the hardware of the CD Burner, the device initializes the CD Burning Software for the test to take place. This is one reason why your software may report the "Power Calibration Error" or ?Calibration Error Full?. With Power Calibration errors they can be caused by different factors and sometimes difficult to locate, especially if the errors are at random. Below are the known factors that will cause the Power Calibration Errors and how to check each factor, it is important that each point is considered if wanting to get to the bottom of the error. Power Calibration Errors can occur when OPC or ROPC tests for the media disc so the condition of the disc, brand of disc and even the firmware for the CD Burner can be the cause for the errors occurring. A device such as a CD Burners can have different problems if there is a power consumption issue with the system and the Power Calibration Error is just one of those problems. If using either an internal or external CD Burner make sure to disconnect all other devices, except the hard drive and Burner, before attempting to burn a disc. Double check all cables for any faults and if possible test with a 2nd Data Cable. It is also advisable to disconnect the power connection for the CD Burner and test with a spare connector. If you have no trouble with other discs, use them and put to one side the lightscribe, other than that try the burner in another pc or with other burning software, as you can see it's quite ridiculous what problems burners can create.

SOURCE: blank dvd not readable

Do you have software capable of writing to a DVD?
Its no good having a drive that can read a DVD - that is all it can do without software. I suspect that is why it is chucking your disc out!

If you have no software then look on the net for some free stuff - plenty about, or buy Nero

Sony Optiarc AD-7581A 8x DVD?±RW DL Notebook IDE Drive w/LightScribe Burner is not being recognized and installed.... It shows the error 10 "device will not start" can anyone help?

Try a cold boot. Shut down the computer. Remove the battery. Unplug the power cord. Wait at least five minutes. Start up the computer. If still does not work, go to device manager --> CD/DVD drives. Uninstall the Optiarc drive. Go to Actions --> Scan for Hardware Changes, or simply reboot to reinstall the drive.
