Question about Sport & Outdoor - Others

2 Answers

My 1977 Evinrude 140 HP outboard engine looses power when it hits @4,200 rpm's and goes down to 3,500 then back up to 4,200 and then back down to 3,000 or about there. This would continue if I didn't slow down to 3,000 on my own. It runs fine at @ 3,000 when I slow it down. I have changed all the fuel lines from the fuel tank to the carbs, removed, cleaned out the fuel tank, put new gas and added a can of SeaFoam. I replaced the water seperator filter and cleaned the fuel filter. I feel the fuel pump is operating OK. Any ideas about what could be causing my problem? Could it be a bad power pack or stator? Help!!

That sounds a little drastic, when others are telling me it could be a bad fuel pump, stator or power pack. I will run it by my mechanic anyway. Any other suggestions or opinions on my problem?

Hi, this is obviously a stator problem since you have cleaned the fuel filter..
Take care

    Mr. Smith-alone,

I can understand how you can feel this could be a stator problem, but do you think it could be a power pack problem and if not, why not and why do you feel it is a stator problem instead of a power pack problem.

    Smith-alone,

Did you receive my last communication? I wrote that I can understand why you might think my problen is stator related, but do you think it could be a power pack problem and if not, why not, and why do you think it is a stator problem?

Hi

The motor needs to turn 6000 to stay good - any less at full throttle, she's lugging at all throttle settings. Lugging promotes choking. Choked-up cylinders lead to sticky rings, lost compression, and eventually, catastrophic failure. If you're not getting close, consider taking a look at your setup -- whether you have room to raise the motor on the transom, or drop an inch or two prop pitch. A good prop guy can help you look at the machine thoroughly.

Your engine should be sealed enough to prevent this..unless you have the engine mounted so low it idles under water...???.. There is a seal that goes between the lower cowl pieces and the engine, a seal around the engine cover(cowl)...and seals that surround all wires and cables.

Does a 1977 Evinrude 70 horsepower engine hav a charging system?

The 70s Johnson or Evinrude outboards of similar sizes did not have any charging system. I had an old Johnson 50HP (key injection) mounted on an 18Ft Zodiac and I needed to remove and recharge the battery once every couple of weeks. Keep the battery dry and the contacts well greased.

I am looking for a diagram of a 1977 evinrude 85hp engine - so i can work out how to remove the tilt rams from the engine to check if they are working correctly

Hi there, You can find all parts diagrams for Evinrude engines here: http://epc.brp.com Just ignore the email entry part and go straight to the database. They are listed by Brand, then year, then HP size. I checked for you and it has the 1977 85HP models listed there. Then just find the right subsection of the outboard and it will bring up exploded diagrams for your viewing!
