I believe probably the easiest and safest way for you is remove your Windows OS Password with Windows Password Seeker. I found it at about.com PC support channel last week, and then I download it from http://www.passwordseeker.com and used it to remove the lost password within 5 minutes. Furthermore, this useful tool no need to reinstall Windows OS. It's worth trying.

I think the best way for you is trying hard to remember the password. If you really cannot remember, you can reset password from another user account with administrator credentials or Do-It-Yourself (DIY) third party recovery tool. Google third party password recovery tool or Windows password seeker, maybe can help you. http://www.passwordseeker.com/howtouse.html

When we install Windows XP, it automatically creates an account "administrator" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your XP login password then try this:
Step 1: Boot computer and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice when you see windows login screen. It'll show classic login box.
Step 2: Type "administrator" (without quotes) in username field and leave password field blank, press Enter and you should be able to login Windows.
Step 3: Now you could change or remove other accounts' passwords, including administrator password and other standard users' passwords
If that should not work, you could use some third party software. Windows Login Recovery is easy-to-use shareware to reset forgotten Windows password. It is designed to create a windows password reset disk. You could follow these steps to recover your password:
Step 1: Download Windows Login Recovery and install it on another computer which has a CD/DVD writer.
Step 2: Run the software and burn the ISO image file into a blank CD/DVD.
Step 3: Recover Windows XP administrator password with nearly burned password recovery disk.
Step 4: Reboot your locked computer without a password required.
OK! That's all. Hope to help.
