Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Our Whirlpool refrigerator is about ten years old. We were on vacation for a month. When we returned, the refrigerator was on, the fan/motor in the freezer was on (blowing lightly), the light was on...everything seemed fine except the inside of the fridge was warm. The fridge is warm inside. The cooling option is set close to 5, the highest. Any suggestions?

So the freezer is good and cold too?One some models there is a vent to allow air to the refrigirator section. It may be stuck or even frozen over if your refrigirator is set too cold.If your freezer fan is blowing PROPERLY and it is cold, the problem is not likely to be the motor or the freon.I am providing a link to whirlpool which may be able to assist you better.I do not see a model number listed on your problem so it's kind of tough.Sorry I could not assist you more.As long as you are sure that 5 is the highest setting,I would call.Good luck.Feel free to reply and let me know how you make out.I hope you have an inexpensive repair too.

Thanks for the link. I didn't make clear that the freezer--although the motor appears to be on--is also warm. There is no cooling anywhere. Does that additional fact change your assessment?

Why yes it does. Now it sounds like perhaps it needs freon which is a little unusual even for a 10 year old refrigerator. There is a possibility of frost on the evaporator coils, but that doesn't seem likely since you were gone a month and the refrigerator sounds warm enough to have defrosted that by now.If you are sure the motor is running normal it is freon. The motor is actually for the evaporator which turns the liquid freon into gas where air is run over the coils and causes coldness. It is then collected into a condenser which turns the gas back into liquid and then to the reservoir. There may be a sensor or relay in that part of the system telling the cooler to go on and off.I feel I am making this easy enough to understand.lol So based on your additional information I would say freon, motor,or sensor/relay.So there is your lesson on basically any a/c system. If you have the proper electrical equipment such as a multimeter,I could tell you how to troubleshoot it.Good luck once again!

I also forgot to mention the possibility of a freon leak.It is pretty rare for refrigerators though.Glad I could help.

1 month old whirlpool refrigator is almost 60 degrees in frig part and 10 below zero in freezer side

It sounds like one of two things, either the evaporator fan is not running(fan in the back of the freezer behind lower back panel) or the bi-metal thermostat that may be in series with it is open..
Also some newer models use a lower voltage fan motor, use to be all were 120 volts........
It is under warranty for one year so call for authorized service to repair it......
(all of the cooling on the refrigerator side is done by air circulating from the freezer side, also possible there is ice blocking the air flow somewhere)
hope this helps

We have a fourteen month old Whirlpool ARC900 4.38CF. Motor is very noisy and doesn't cut out. Fridge not cold inside, so food gone off. Outside front door gets cold.

Good day,
The machine has 3 motors. The fan motor behind the rear panel in the freezer and a condenser fan motor located near the compressor that cools the compressor. If one of those 2 are an issue you should be able to change the bad one. It's pretty much a nuts and bolts job.
However, if it's the compressor, leave it alone. It carries a 5 year warranty. Call your selling dealer and schedule a warranty service call.

My ten years old Whirlpool AWM285 had a problem

You need to replace the carbon brushes on the motor. If this doesn't work then you will need to replace the motor itself

Our ten-year-old Whirlpool refrigerator has been getting warmer the last 3 days, even though the setting is on "coldest." Should I call a repairman or just get a new one? LDA

Your trouble is probably as simple as a failed component in the units self defrost circuit. A technician can thaw out your evaporator coil and replace the faulty component at a reasonable cost. Another cause could be your condensor fan motor is failing. This would cause the compressor to overheat and shut down on it's internal overload. It comes back on when it cools down, and the cycle is repeated. This is also a reasonable cost repair.

Icemaker stuck in 'vacation mode'

Feel inside the ice slots are there any old cubes that have evaporated in time? Take the ice maker out and clean it up and place it back inside to see if it will fill with fresh water. Take a hair dryer and melt the old ice inside the slots and see if it will try to fill. I will wait for a response from you.

Freezer / Refrigerator not cooling

When the fans are running the compressor should also be running. If the compressor is hot but not running you have a compressor problem. If the compressor is running check for frost on back wall of the freezer compartment which would indicate a defrost system problem. At five years old have you cleaned the condenser where the heat is transferred to the outside air in the room?
