Are the manual switches on the fan in the 'on' position?
Select the maximum fan speed on the remote and then operate the manual switch on the fan. Set that to the highest speed then control it with the remote.
Same theory applies to the light.
If this is not the problem then the remote receiver on the fan is probably faulty.

Well, you can take it down and replace the switch. Most decent hardware stores have generic internal switches. You could unscrew the bulb a little every time you want it off.
You could mount a wall switch for the unit and live with the fan and light always being on at the same time.
The pull-switch is not too difficult to replace, just seems scary. disconnect the unit from all power and do the work at the table.
Keep all fasteners in order of removal, and make notes or label parts with tape as you disassemble. Take a picture of the switch when you get it open and show it to the person at the store. Bring home the new switch and swap it in one wire at a time.

If you go to Monte carlo's website, www.montecarlofans.com, and in the upper right hand side of the screen there is a search bar. If you search for your model number you will realize that they discontinued that model of fan. They won't have a motor for a discontinued fan unless they use the same motor for another model fan (not likely), but I took the liberty to call and find out for sure. The answer is no, they are discontinued. Sorry, but looks like you need a new fan.
