Question about Ovens

1 Answer

I have a Frigidaire gas oven with an electric igniter (5-10 years old). When I go to heat the oven, the igniter comes on and i smell gas, but the burner never fires. i can't say how hot the igniter is (orange, but dull around the edges). And I cant say how strong the gas smell is (after about 10 minutes you can smell it in the next room). The range works fine. What do you think?

The ignitor may have to be replaced and placed in a spot that ignites the gas. There should be a safety feature known as a thermocoupler that doesn't allow the gas to go to the next room when it doesn't light, I would think. Kind of like a gas water heater's.

I would have an appliance professional fix this one for you. Don't want any gas explosions, you know.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm wondering if it is worth getting a repair or whether i should just get a new oven. The repairman want $65 just for diagnostic.

$65 isn't bad for a diagnostic, and he might be able to direct you more specifically to fix the problem.

In most cases if it doesn't light, but the ignitor is on, the gas flow isn't hitting the ignitor at the right 'spot,' but in some cases the ignitor isn't getting hot enough (even though it gets orange which is pretty hot- like a glow plug in a diesel engine).

I would go for the repair for a 5-10 year old oven, unless you have a couple of thousand or more to spare for a new one.

    Good luck on this repair.

If the range still works, then the oven should be an easy fix for the appliance guy, since there's only one or two burners in there.

Good morning, your oven most likely has a weak igniter. That would keep the gas safety valve from opening properly. It will get close to the required amperage but valve will only flutter and not allow enough gas to ignite. Hope that helps.

I don't have a solution, but I was wondering if it constantly beeps until you press the start button? I am having the same problem with my oven preheating. Until we can figure out how to stop this we unplug it and shut the gas off when not in use.

Gas stove When I turn on the oven, I smell gas,

This is more than likely the igniter to be sure you will need to do an amp draw on the igniter. To do this watch the video on troubleshooting a gas oven at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html

Sounds like the igniter, Here is a video that shows you how to test it. Scroll down to How to Troubleshoot a gas oven that won't heat.

My oven which is only 5 years old won't warm up on bake or broil

This sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symptoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

WHY WON'T MY OVEN HEAT UP?

Most modern gas ovens and many broilers use a "glow-bar" style of igniter that glows red-hot to ignite the gas. If the igniter doesn't reach the proper temperature, the gas valve won't open. You may need to replace the igniter.
