Check the breakers at the main panel flip them all the way off and back on. If this doesn't help check the outside breakers or diconnects near the units for power. Some disconnects have fuses or breakers so you may need to check these for power also.

My heat pump started making a squealing noise at all fan speeds. I think it may be the fan or motor bearings. It was running continuously last night. It is 32 degrees outside.

Assuming you mean the indoor unit, you're no doubt correct. Modern fan motor bearings can't be lubricated. It's a new fan motor to fix this. It will run with the noise for a few days, then lock up totally.

You should also report the continuous run to your HVAC repairman. At 32 degrees outside, I would think there should still be enough output from the heat pump to cycle. Perhaps low on refrigerant or a compressor that's losing. He could check both before you decide on the fan motor replacement.

15-20 years is about the max life on that unit. You may be better advised to replace it than throw a few hundred dollars here and there into repairs.

Why does it turn on the A/C compressor when the recirculate button is depressed and turned on?

Its programmed that way. Recirculation keeps the cold air inside the car. Where as vent draws air from the outside. It's normal, but you can turn the temp control to warmer if you want it to stay that way.

LUX TX500E thermostat flashing fan. Have installed batteries backwards and reset to factory settings installed new batteries as well. Still flashing fan. Furnace not working.

With this thermostat, it may be flashing FAN because the HVAC (any heating or cooling unit) unit isn't working. In the winter, the pilot light for the heat may not be lit or the air intake/exhaust could be blocked. In the summer, the AC coils could be frozen or there may be another problem. Go to the HVAC unit and look for any lights at or near the control board. Check the outside unit for problems as well.

If there is no problem with the HVAC, try resetting the software in the thermostat. Use a bent paperclip to press the reset button above the Next button; the reset button is inside a small recessed spot. If the problem persists, try a different thermostat. If a different thermostat doesn't work, the HVAC system needs to be serviced.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the type of furnace you have (electric, gas, oil). That might help determine what issue you need to look for on the main unit.

Not showing outside temp, just shows 2 black lines

Is this at the thermostat? Have you replaced any batteries in it? If it is powered from the HVAC units, then is there a fuse blown for the power supply to the thermostat? You depending on where the HVAC units are located, you may need to vist the attic or crawlspace to check this out.

Outside unit runs continuously, even when system is off.

On A/C units, there is a low voltage line that leads to a contactor, which engages to close the high voltage circuit to the condensor unit. Over time, the accual contacts in the contactor can weld themselves together. Try shutting off your furnace breaker but leaving on the one for the outside condensor unit. If it still runs, your contactor probably needs replaced. Contact a licensed electrician or HVAC contractor and tell them you think your contactor is in need of replacement. Is a fairly simple and quick replace, but the contactor itself is not cheap.

Air conditioning

Here are a couple things to check first make sure that the filter inside is clean if not replace. 2nd the outside coil needs to be cleaned at least once a year to ensure effeciency. These two things will make a dramatic improvement in operating costs and capability of the unit.
