Apple Ipod Classic-Itunes won't recognized Device

My son just bought an Ipod classic, but we can't get Itunes to recognize the device. We have Windows XP SP2 and the IPOD is recognized on the computer, but it won't show up on Itunes. The Ipod is connected to the USB 2 properly because it shows on the Ipod as being connected. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

I am having same problem as Jeff. 80gb classic. I have a macbook pro. It shows up on the desktop but nothing in the iTunes source list. Also when it's not connected, I tried to play a game and the game won't load. It must be a faulty one, I think.
I tried to do the 5 r's as suggested from the Apple website but it hasn't worked. I'm in ireland and bought it from U.S. would that be the problem??
    I'm lost.

My ipod not recognized by itunes in order to reinstall the software

Connections b> The USB cable must be securely connected both to the iPod and to the selected USB port on the computer. Reattach the cable at both ends, and click "Computer" in the start menu to see if the iPod is shown connected to the drive for that USB port. b> Drivers b> If the drivers of the computer responsible for the USB interface are out of date, malfunctioning or incorrectly installed, that may also cause the iPod to not be recognized by the computer. If this is the case, the device may not appear in iTunes and there may be an exclamation point next to the device in Device Manager. b> Software b> The latest version of iTunes is recommended to best communicate with the various models of iPod. Go to the iTunes website or click "Help" and "Check for Updates" in iTunes to install the most recent update. Further, the computer must be running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 for PCs, or OS X v.10.4.11 or later for Macs. b> Battery b> The iPod's battery must have sufficient charge to be recognized in iTunes; charge it either via USB connection or another power source if the indicator shows a low battery. Once the battery has charged, try to connect the iPod to the computer via USB cable again. Ipod not recognized Device not recognized

Does the computer not recognize it or windows media player? If it's the computer then your USB drive on the comp is to old. If it's wmp then maybe your iPod isn't supporte or something

Ipod classic won't show up in computer or itunes

I would try a reinstall of itunes. Or go into your preferences and delete it from your devices list and let it reconnect. You need to be using the newest version of itunes also. Hope that helped.
