Plugged this in and got to the password window done went to the acceptance window tried and laptop wouldn't respond when I accepted tried it many times and then it just went black, shutdone not even the fan-should I return this to the place of purchase Compac-Presario CQ62-209WM Notebook PC

It seems that installation didn't go very well. I have done many upgrades and it picked user name and password. No problems.
Try to get a disk with the version of windows 10 you downloaded so that you revert back to the previous version or do a repair.
Since I am not in front of your computer and as a technician then i could find some other information.

Do you mean that it's logging off of windows? Or it won't boot to windows?

You mean the windows log on pass? Which version of windows do you have? Try logging in at the administrator account (the default pass is blank).
