Question about Garmin nuvi 255W GPS Receiver

1 Answer

On an out of town trip, Tuesday, and not familiar with my trip, my Nuvi was plugged in to the 12v port but kept breaking and remaking the electrical connection. I tested the power port, (had a power inverter with me), and the port was good. I searched the power feed, for shorts, in that wire and found no point of failure. The Make / Break switching from off to on was irrattic. I have very low (battery) power now, (= 1 bar, but it woerks), and am concerned aboutlosing my stored addresses and reliable service.

The satnav can be charged from your computer by plugging it into the USB port. This will be slower than from a car but it will keep your information safe while you trace the problem with the car charging.

It doesn't power up even when plug in charging

Hello,

Do you notice the light on your power cable coming on when your cable is plugged into your cars 12v outlet? Your power cable may be dead or the fuse for your cars 12v port may have blown out. If you dont notice the light on your cable is on i would try another cable in the outlet see if the light comes on. I would also maybe try your cable in another car, if it works that means your cars 12v socket has blown out. Replacement fuses can be obtained from your car dealership.

Hope this helps!

I have just purchased a sendai universal home charger, when I plug it is my Garmin 200, and the other end into the electrical socket I get a picture on the screen, looks like a computer with a plug running...

The nuvi thinks you've connected it to the USB port of your home computer. It's charging, so pay no attention to the screen.

If you HAD connected it to the USB port, you would also see the nuvi as a storage device attached to your computer. That's how you can download pictures that you can display on your nuvi. It's also the mechanism used when you update your maps and/or software.

Nuvi 200 froze in middle of trip reset with button on bottom and now all i get is a screen that says garmin and thats all

Use the USB cord that came with your Garmin. Plug it into the side of the Garmin and the other end into the USB port on your computer. Go to www.garmin.com. Look for downloads of your NUVI 200. Download the latest update and see if that solves the problem.

Garmin wont turn on

Yes, it's possible to have damaged your GPS. I had a customer that sent me a dead Nuvi. I replaced the board and sent it back. As soon as they got it back, they said they plugged it into the charger and within a few seconds it died again. They sent it back to me and this time I asked for the charger. It wasn't a Garmin charger. It was a cell phone charger. It damaged the Nuvi again. So, I put in another board and sold them a OEM Garmin charger. Problem solved.

What are the instruction on how long to charge

I just purchased the 255w yesterday and set it up in the car for the return trip. I also saw it did not say how long to charge, but there are green bars on the top right that tell how much charge there is. The return trip was about an hour and a half and it was completely charged with all bars by the time I arrived, from the car's 12v accessary jack.
