Question about Ovens

1 Answer

I just now dropped a glass lid on the top of my smooth top range. I saw little red lights through the translucent glass of the range move out from the center toward the heading elements, and now none of the elements work, nor do the hot burner lights. Glass was not damaged. Everything on the control panel still works. I haven't taken the top off yet, but I want to know if there's a fuse or something else simple that I should check for, and to see if anyone has any ideas about what the problem might be and what I should be looking for when I take it apart. Thanks!

The small red lights were the signs of a short moving along the embedded wires that were powering the elements toward the power connectors and from there to the power source.
My guess is that the elements are fried, the power source most likely also. This is going to be a major repair, very expensive.

Convection fan doesn't work either, which points at least to the power source. What part is that? I'm not finding a part called "Power Source"

Apparently on your exact model all the elements are powered directly from the mains thru a controller. So actually there's no power source, just that

To be sure check it with a voltmeter - check the outputs.

Resolved. When you stated that the clock/controller was probably blown, I thought it was peculiar that the clock still worked. It's a solid state component and when one aspect of such a thing doesn't work usually the whole thing doesn't work. Not knowing anything else to do, and being a computer guy, I rebooted it by throwing the breakers. Everything works perfectly now.

In retrospect, I kind of think one of the two 40 amp breakers was thrown. The other one gave it enough juice to run the clock and the on/off lights for the elements, but not the elements themselves. One of the breakers was a tiny bit out of place when I turned them off, and when I turned them back on they lined up perfectly. If the clock had not worked, I'd have checked the breaker box right away.

I did, however, definitely see the shorts in the wires. My question now is, could that have damaged the wires? Is this thing a fire hazard now?

I would be extremely cautious with it from now on. But better be safe than sorry - verify them thoroughly and if you have even the slightest suspicion that something isn't quite right, replace them.

While preheating my electric frigidaire smooth top oven, we heard a loud pop and saw a flash. The breaker had tripped. After resetting it, the clock and digital features still work, and so does the st

I appreciate your inquiry, Stephanie Givan!

From what you are describing it sounds like a possible short with your breaker box or issue with your terminal block within your Frigidaire range. I would recommend reaching out to a professional technician for a proper diagnosis to be completed. The technician will have the correct tools to check for any electrical issues within the range to make sure the correct component is being replaced. This will help avoid any unnecessary part purchases. -Matt

The oven will not light on my Whirlpool gas oven Mod SF368LEPQ 2. The stove top burners still light.

Sounds like you need an bake element ignitor if the bake doesn't work but if the broil also doesn't work, it could be the electronic clock/timer control. the part number for the bake ignitor is 8054129 .Best off to call a reliable service company such as Sears.

I have an electric range with a ceramic top. How do I clean it? There is bubbles on the ceramic too, is this from overheating? How do I get those off?

the main killer of glass cooktops is sugar.it fuses with the top and you cannot get it off. the best way is a razor knife scrape it at a 30 deg. angle. there are some cleaners made for smooth tops as well.good luck!

I cannot remove the oven light cover in my Whirlpool gas range.

Put on a rubber 'serving' glove or dish washing glove and it will give you some traction to grip the glass to turn it

The inside of my self cleaning smooth top range

Using any kind of cleaning solution can cause the self-clean catalytic coating to be damaged. The glass itself isn't sensitive but don't apply anything like oven cleaner or other caustic cleaner to any of the other surfaces unless your owner's guide specifically permits it. On the glass, I have on occasion used a new single-edge razor blade to remove any heavy, baked on splatters and then conventonal glass cleaner to finish.

Usually short instructions come with the glass. Just be careful about the wires not to pinch them tween the new glass and the frame. Use the type sealant they recommend.
