Installing Windows 8

Have you check the hardware compatibility on the Computer? There is a minimum spec requirement to run windows 8. Is it a 32 or 64 bit windows 8? The HP A720N was available for sale in Sept. 1, 2004. I doubt if it will run win 8. The Ram and Graphics are going to be a big issue. Take a look at this Min. Requirements: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/system-requirements If you can, return Win 8. Looking at your specs, I don't think you can run Win 7? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/system-requirements Perhaps Vista.

As downloading Microsoft Security Essentials (windows 7) the downloading stops cause error 0x800736B3

Very common. Microsoft blame your internet service provider as it can be caused by the internet stopping and Essentials can't keep up with it and throws your system off.
Try downloading a registry cleaning utility, there is talk that that gives that error also.
I gave up and use Norton instead!

[Ithr]checkpoint failure dell 8400 dimension

What can cause this error?

Well, this is the problem since quite a variety of problems can trigger the error.

1: the bios can be malfunctioning (a bios reset or flash can give a solution)
2: the cpu can be malfunctioning (this requires a new cpu)
3: the cpu socket can be failing (this requires a new mb)
4: the problem can be with bad usb sockets
5: even a bad uplink to a usb hub can cause this error to appear.
Did you change your monitor lately? I would chase down the USB things first...that and the monitor seem to trip the trigger...
Hope this get you started- I think you were right on target with the flash of the BIOS-try it again using the BIOS flash downloaded from the dell site...and to run the chipset again...it just might
Good luck my friend, hope this helps, please leave rating, thank you kindly

Mss32.dll Error is a common Windows error message. Mss32.dll Error is usually caused by a missing system files, wrong system settings or a corrupted registry file. Use CTRL+ALT+DEL to get the task manager, if there is anything listed with [Not Responding] end task it. Next, run a registry scan to check for registry errors & other system problems. 96% of the time this will fix the cause of the error

It is best to clean your registry in order to optimize system performance & Fix the cause of many Windows Errors.

When i turn off my computer it says END PROGRAM ccSvc.Hst When I press end program it takes forever for my computer to turn off. Also other option says press cancel and return to windows when I do this...

That file is part of Norton/Symantec security suite. I've seen that error on many systems with Norton Products.

You may be able to avoid the error by closing Norton in the system tray prior to shutdown of the system.

When you select shutdown from the menu, windows forces all running programs to shutdown, including the antivirus. For whatever reason, sometimes Norton doesn't like the shutdown request.

If you are not especially attached to the Norton product, you might try uninstalling it and trying AVG or Avast antivirus.

System root error

Unlike the rest of these phonies I read the problem if you can't boot, try hitting F8 after the bios flash screen and just before the harddrive starts booting the OS (the windows label comes up)
You should now have a list of options select safe mode and enter.
From safe mode you will be able to back up all your files (photos, docs, music and don't forget email if your using thunderbird or outlook.) to CD/DVD or a network drive. I would do this before you start trying to rectify the problem because in the end a full reload will always fix the problem.
Do you have the recovery discs that came with your PC? If not you can attempt system restore. Did you try to install the SP2 or just download it? If you are sure this caused the problem get rid of it too. Where did you get it? If it was from a torrent site (not microsoft) it could have been packed with malware....
Keep me posted on your progress.
